Confused computer makes ticking noise in CPU and doesnt turn on

i have a Windows XP and lately its been making a ticking noise and the computer wont turn on , eventually the noise goes away and the computer turns on and works fine , though at times when i shut it down it sometimes freezes when it says , " windows is shutting down" , im wondering what could be causing the noise

Re: computer makes ticking noise in CPU and doesnt turn on

usually the ticking is the sound of a harddrive going bad....back up all your data files on an external drive and install a brand new harddrive and reload windows xp and all your drivers and programs....
