Upgrade ram on laptop with no OS

Hi, I need to add another stick of ram to my laptop however right now it has no OS. I am trying to install a Linux distro and it is not happening with 32mb ram. When I have fitted the new 64mb ram will my machine recognise the hardware without an OS installed or do I need to run a programme to install the ram?

Re: Upgrade ram on laptop with no OS

Installing RAM is all hardware related, you won't need to change any settings for it unless stated in your laptop manual. When you get your new RAM, make sure it's the same type of memory that is already installed or you can do one better; remove the RAM you have now and install your new RAM alone (you need 256MB+ pref.).

If you are unsure of what RAM you require, go to www.crucial.com and use the online diagnostic.

Re: Upgrade ram on laptop with no OS

64MB of RAM will still be slim for Linux. Most Linux distros, that I know of, want at least 256MB of RAM to work efficiently.
