Help needed, bad repair/build

Hi all folks, help would be muchly appreciated and stop me from pulling my hair out!

My computer originally died and I assumed that this was either the PSU or the motherboard so I replaced both, whilst ordering these parts I thought what the hell I'll buy other parts and salvage old parts to build a new pc.

So I ordered a new:

500W power supply off ebuyer.com (own brand, the same one that was in old build)

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

ASROCK G31M-S G31 Socket 775 VGA Out 6 Channel Audio Motherboard

Western Digital WD1600AAJS 160GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 8MB Cache - OEM

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium -SP1- Licence and media - 1 PC - OEM - DVD - 32-bit - English

2 x 2gb DDR2 800mhz ram pc6400

So I get all the parts and put it all together in my existing Antec 900 case, connect altogether with all the leads and what not, followed the mobo manual for correct connections etc and still nothing, nada, zilch.

I then tried reconnecting all the cables again and still nothing!
The power supply then sparked and popped and I got scared so now I'm not going near the thing.

What I need to know is if this isn't the end of the world and all the parts I bought for around £250 hasn't just all been fried and won't work.

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Re: Help needed, bad repair/build

Hard to tell what may be damaged or not without installing a Quality power supply and trying to boot, I would pull the board and build it on the bench to eliminate the possibility of a standoff out of place or a case short> How to Bench Test Your System

What Video card are you using in this build?

Re: Help needed, bad repair/build

thanks for getting back to me.
Am I correct in thinking that it is now unsafe to use this power supply that was sparking?
I would purchase a new, better power supply but it's just a case of money.
I'm using an old ATI Powercolor 1600 XT
I shall use the bench test next time :)

Re: Help needed, bad repair/build

If sparks came from the PSU, do not try to use it again.

yeah thought so :(
Is it worth me buying new PSU just to find out it fried everything else? I'm wondering whether to cut my losses and just call it as a bad job and move on. But then that would mean buying a retail pc for more money, I can't win lol

thanks for the ongoing spport guys, i have to get off now, I'll check back later.

Re: Help needed, bad repair/build

Can you borrow a PSU to see if it will boot? No need to spend money on a prebuilt when you have some good parts on hand.
