My System

A couple of questions about ram.

Hey guys, I've bought a laptop and while it does have 3 GB of ram I ran a Windows Memory Check and it said that my ram is starting to go. It's Samsung ram and I've heard very bad things about it. So, I've got a few questions.

1. Just to be sure, memory can cause a lot of BSOD's, correct? I am running Windows 7 on it, and get crashes there but not on Vista (from what I can tell). I get them each time I install a program.

2. I have single channel, as it is a laptop, but could I perhaps put a dual channel mix into a single channel? Would there be any problems with that, as I am having trouble finding PC2-5300 that is cheap and not for Mac. :P

Thanks for your support guys!

If you do not get crashes when using Vista, it is more likely a system problem with Win7. You can click the Memtest link in my signature to download a good memory diagnostic to confirm or rule out memory failure

2. I have single channel, as it is a laptop, but could I perhaps put a dual channel mix into a single channel? Would there be any problems with that,

What Brand/Model? Does it have one slot for memory ot two?

as I am having trouble finding PC2-5300 that is cheap and not for Mac. :P

Any of these should work fine if you need to replace the memory

Re: A couple of questions about ram.

I am unable to see the "edit" button, but here are the answers to your question.

1. Ran the memory test, did a full "Pass" and there were 0 errors, because it took an hour and a half I stopped it after the first Pass, it had said complete. I figure that the memory could perhaps still be faulty, but it just never failed during the test. I figure that's a good thing.

2. I do have two slots for RAM, but CPU-Z says it's Single Channel. I have a Toshiba L350D - part number PSLE0C-01208C. The current brand of RAM is Samsung.

Thank you for your help, and sorry I couldn't find the edit button.

Re: A couple of questions about ram.

One pass is not a good test . . I woul let it run overnite to test it fully

Try the memory configurator at http://www.crucial.com/ to see what it tells you about what you have and what you can use. Let it scan the system and post back with the results

Re: A couple of questions about ram.

I ran the test over night, and I ran 6 "passes" and resulted in 0 errors. Is that long enough or should I run it longer?

I ran the Crucial test and it just results back with the amount of RAM I have install, my processor speed and type. I'll run it in Vista and see if I get any more information.

I also got the BSOD crash again, except I was installing updates when it happened in Windows 7. I believe that it is caused by Power ISO, as I used to run the system fine without Power ISO.

That should be long enough to rule out memory failure

It should have reported what is installed, how many slots and how many are filled as well as what the maximum amount each slot can hold

I also got the BSOD crash again, except I was installing updates when it happened in Windows 7. I believe that it is caused by Power ISO, as I used to run the system fine without Power ISO.

It's sounding more and more like a conflict in win7

I click Scan my System, download the program, run it. A new browser opens up and states this:

Indeed it still does sound like one, but this is an exact image of the one I had working for several months before.
