RAM problem.

Hi, I'm new here.

I recently purchased and installed new RAM, but Windows XP doesn't seem to recognize it. There are 2 RAM slots. Both currently have two 1GB sticks of RAM in them. When I check the system setup on the boot up screen, it says one of the memory slot is not installed, and the other says it has 1024 MB in it. What could be the problem? I have tried reseating the old and new RAM between memory banks 1&2. My mobo should be able to handle up to 2GB.

Both new and old memory were able to be recognized by memory banks 1 and 2 when inserted by themselves. When inserted together, only one bank is displayed. It seems like it only recognizes the new RAM.

Re: RAM problem.

Is the new RAM the exact same..."as the old RAM"?

Re: RAM problem.

No, they're different, but I've tried mixing RAMs before on this mobo and it runs fine.

Re: RAM problem.

make sure the mhz of the ram is the same, and that your computer is compatible with the mhz of the ram. its probably somewhere around 400-667 or so, since your comp can only hold 2 gigs. post your mobo up and the ram you bought.

if all is well in that category you have 1 of 2 problems:

A.) one of your ram slots is burned out
B.) you purchased a faulty stick of ram
