Help buying 400W PSU
I'm looking at tigerdirect.ca (newegg or elsewhere would probably be fine as well) for a new PSU for an old computer. The previous PSU died on me. I've already been told 400W is more than enough, it's really old and all. I don't wanna spend much on this though, the cheaper the better. I've looked at some of them, but 50 dollars is quite a lot for it. It ran a 350W for a few years, a little noisy (may not have been the PSU), but was enough. 512MB RAM, Single Core, FX 5200, 80GB IDE HD, not much of a computer really. I plan to reformat it after I back up and mess around with it.
I could use some suggestions for a cheap but decent PSU. Connectors Needed (this is the minimum): 4 pin molex - x2 20 pin to motherboard (yes it is a 20 pin, which ticked me cause I couldn't use my spare one, it was 24 only) 4 pin to CPU mini molex to floppy (I think that's what it's called, but it's the floppy pin regardless) Last edited by darksteel88; 04-25-2009 at 10:13 AM. |

Re: Help buying 400W PSU
Hi,
A lot of 24 pin connectors are really 20+4 and 4 pins actually come apart from the connector. Have you check this on your spare supply?

Re: Help buying 400W PSU
I know what I'm talking about when I'm dealing with PSU. We did a lab on it in my tech class and I've purchased a few over the years. I know what the difference is between 20, 20+4 and 24. The one I had was a stock PSU that came in my computer. It was 24 pin only and I am sure of it. I replaced it a while ago with a new PSU when I upgraded, I wish I could have used it, but sadly, I cannot.
Can someone else please help me find one? |

Re: Help buying 400W PSU
You could use the 24 pin and leave the extra 4 "hang" over the socket.
Or one of these> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812200065 |

Re: Help buying 400W PSU
I tried that, but it didn't work. I'd be sceptical doing that. Hmm, that might work (the converter cable that is). I'll post the details of the unused PSU in a bit.
No name brand 350 stock PSU. Could you find that cable on TD? My mom is suggesting to go out there today. Last edited by darksteel88; 04-25-2009 at 11:16 AM. |

Re: Help buying 400W PSU
You chance ruining your entire system trying to save $20 on some competitive power supply. Forget about wattage for a minute, and take into account the voltage fluctuation that occurs in low end power supplies.
