is it 'reasonable/doable' to incorporate two existing branded 500W psu's into a pc build in place of a 750/800W unit?
would it work? what are the risks?

Re: flaky question worth asking?
do-able yes........ but the risks are rather high especially when you fiugre into the equation the cost of high end computer parts being placed in harms way,
the biggest hurdle with a dual PSU is inter connected electrical ground, if one unit has a problem or overload which enables its circuit protections; chances become very good the other unit will get involved also. not worth the risk! the absence of protections to prevent an electrical spike or back feed make such a dual psu an unattractive configuration for a high end system

Re: flaky question worth asking?
I echo the Don't do it crowd. However, since Joe has given you the skinny, I am posting just to lead you toward a real steal on a Corsair 850 at $104.99 after mail in rebate of $20. Might want to take a look, this one won't be on long:

Re: flaky question worth asking?
thanks for the link Tumbleweed36.
a bargain though it is it's probably going to be more expensive for me than buying locally, especially after I've added freight, import duty and sales taxes for a US to UK shipment of that item BUT at least I know what to look out for and buy into :) regards, yoyojoe
