background - while reseraching quad core cpu's and compatible mobo's I've noticed in passing that mention was made for the need of 2 x 4 pin power connectors to assure that sufficent juice is available as required for the cores (I don't recall which cpu/mobo combo's atm).
my question(s) - for quad core cpu's and their mobo's are there psu's specifically targetted for this breed of pc hardware or will a suitably rated 'standard' psu be fit for purpose? thanks, yoyojoe

Re: confused about psu for quad core mobo
First of all, the most important purchase you make with a new computer is the power supply. There are so many "standard" (using your term) power supplies out there that are very reasonably priced, but they won't stand up to the more modern computer. If they do run the rig, it won't last long.
Therefore, don't get yourself in to purchasing a no-name supply that doesn't have enough wattage or amps per +12 rail to pull your rig. Here is a list of supplies that are recommended by our Hardware Team as adequate (assuming the wattage is adequate) high quality units for the computers of today: Seasonic – Any Model Corsair – Any Model PC Power & Cooling – Any Model Thermaltake – “Toughpower” Series Only Coolermaster – “Real Power Pro” Series Only If you have a specific computer setup (list specs), then one of our hardware team members can help you select a power supply that will meet your needs. Hope this information helps to answer your inquiry.

Re: confused about psu for quad core mobo
Tumbleweed36, oldjoe, thank you for your post.
hmmm, 'standard' wasn't a very good choice of term to use on my part was it?, sorry. from your posts what I infer is that, given that a required psu rating is correctly identified/specified then any of the above identified names/models is an appropriate choice for a quad core rig - i.e. what i am inferring is that if the mobo needs one or two 4 pin power connectors to it then that will not be an issue for the psu because (I assume) there will be sufficent interconnects/leads supplied with the psu for such a need. if the above inference is correct then my query is resolved. many thanks and best wishes. yoyojoe

Re: confused about psu for quad core mobo
Often the connector will be in a 4+4 configuration, so it can be used for either ATX12v. (4 pin) or EPS12v. (8 pin).
