PSU Compatibility
Hi, I've recently purchased a new 750w PSU for my PC. The PC is a bit old, though, and the disk drive doesn't seem to have a place to connect any of the cords from the PSU. My computer is an HP Pavilion a6230n Desktop PC. Is the PSU I bought too advanced to go into this PC? If so, could anyone recommend a different PSU that will work in the PC? (Must be 650w+)

Re: PSU Compatibility
Your drives should be either sata or ide, and more than likely sata. Look at the back of the drive, there are two "L" shaped connectors, the short one is for your data cable, long one for power. Then look at the ends of the power supply cables, should be "L" shaped sockets on a couple of them anyway. Sometimes they'll be at the end of a cable that has 4 pin molexes. And, if by some chance your drive is ide, then a 4 pin molex provides the power. For a psu to not have sata connectors would mean that it is a very old model, and probably has amperages geared towards older pc's.

Re: PSU Compatibility
This is the power supply. Bear in mind that it has connections to every port in the PC EXCEPT for the disk drive.

Re: PSU Compatibility
Gosh, it's hard for me to explain because I don't know the names of all the parts...You know the thing that you put CDs in? That's the thing that has the port that the PSU won't connect to. The other thing, I believe it's called the hard drive, has the same kind of port, BUT it also has another kind on the other side that the PSU can connect to. The CD thingy does not have that.

Re: PSU Compatibility
OK, both of those are either sata or ide. Look on the back of the drive and see if there is an L shaped connector (sata) or a connector that has 4 largeish pins in a sort of elongated D. There are definitely proper connectors on the power supply cables.

Re: PSU Compatibility
Here's a link to some excellent photos of the various connections provided on power supply cables. Your drives will need the 4 pin peripheral if ide, and sata if sata.

Re: PSU Compatibility
Edit: I think I may have found the problem. I'm an idiot...My PC uses SATA, I just got confused because the SATA cables from my old PSU look a bit different than the ones from my new PSU. Upon closer examination, though, I see that they're the same thing. Thank you for your assistance.

Re: PSU Compatibility
The 750TX has 8 of the 4pin peripheral connectors for IDE drives, and 8 sata connectors. There are a very few that can use either. The 4 pin connectors on the cable have springy press in pieces on the sides, supposed to make them easier to remove. Look in the picture, from newegg, of all the cables. Top left are the 4 pin molex connectors, AKA (also known as) 4 pin peripheral. They are for IDE drives. Here's a link to the image, not sure if the right one will come up, if not, just select the serpents nest of cables picture.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...Power%20Supply edit - The pictures come up, but the first pic is the large one. You have to click on the cables to get that image.
