upgrading power supply
I have the HP pavilion m9040n PC with I think a 300W power supply. I want to install the ATI Radeon HD 3870 video card which needs a 450Watt power supply. What power supply upgrade do you recommend and is the computer designed to tolerate the heat generated etc? Any advice is deeply appreciated.
Thanks! |

Re: upgrading power supply
a quality 750 watt or 650 watt will do fine
750w PSU Corsair 750w $120 after rebate $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 650w Corsair PSU $100 after rebate $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 the 750watt PSU is a little overkill but its an option at least you might want to think about replacing your case since its most likely poorly cooled and something like this will keep it cooler Antec 300 $60 1 x 120mm front fan (sucking air in) 1 x 140mm top fan (blowing air out) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129042 |

Re: upgrading power supply
I agree with Mcninjaguy.
Id go a good quality named brand 600 - 750 watt for future proofing your system. Remember you PSU is your system's workhorse - if your PSU is rubbish, so is your expensive rig.

Re: upgrading power supply
If you are not planning on an immediate upgrade in the video card, the 650 he mentioned should be just fine and a 750 is kind of overkill to be quite honest IMHO.
