[SOLVED] Do I need to uprgrade my Power Supply?
Hello everyone, I just have a quick question. Currently I have the Corsair 650w power supply. Here it is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005
This is my current setup: AMD AthlonX2 6000@3Ghz ECS GF8200A Motherboard PNY 9600GT 4 gigs of 800mhz Ram 1 320GB HD 7200rpm 1 Dvd/cdrom Vista Home Premium 64-bit Now, basically I just want to know if my 650 watt psu will be able to handle a 9800GTX+. Its this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130416 It has basically the same power requirements as the 9600gt. And this one only needs one 6-pin power connector. I have run several wattage calculators and it looks like I would be able to run it fine. But I just want to make sure.. My psu is a great quality one, I would hate to overtax it or buy a new one. Thanks in advance for your help! |

Corsair is indeed good PSU...
How old is your PSU??? Is it dusted inside??? Was running fine all the way until now??? I think it will serve your needs... But take a look at this thread: Power Supply Information and Selection |

Re: Do I need to uprgrade my Power Supply?
Hey, thanks for the quick response!
I checked out that thread, and my exact power supply is recommended as a "power user desktop". Which is defined as this: The Power Desktop Computer Class is similar to the Standard desktop plus more demanding gaming usage, plus one can explore the option of overclocking with this unit. The computer would include numerous Hardware upgrades with multiple drives and a more powerful CPU paired with a fuller featured motherboard. The power desktop computer class is best suited with a 600-750 watt PSU of high quality construction. Those who choose this class computer should have a dual core CPU with ONE dedicated video card up to and including any single engine video card an the market demanding up to 125 watts. This would include the Nvidia 8800 GTS or the ATI 4850 video card. The Power Desktop Computer Class will run some medium power dual video cards, but are not intended to run dual 8800 GTX or dual ATI 4850 video cards. So, I'm safe right? I have no intention of ever running SLI. Thanks again! |

Re: Do I need to uprgrade my Power Supply?
Normally if you were looking to buy both the card and PSU I would recommend a 750TX to go with it, but since you already have the 650TX I say go with it and check your voltages occasionally, if the 12v starts to drop or the supply starts running the higher all the time then you know what you have to do.

Re: Do I need to uprgrade my Power Supply?
Thank you both for your help. I have a potential buyer for my 9600gt card, and I know he needs a new power supply. So I might be able to upgrade to the 750w one. But I'm glad that my 650 will work. Thanks again!
