EEK! why not 8 gigs of ram ?

a friend of mine which is a PC tech { certified } says that if you put in more than the maximum allowable ram that your computer will not recognize it and more than likely will actually make it slower , and that maximum efficiency {speed } is usually around 3 to 3.5 gig , is this true ? has anyone seen what happens when you stick 8 gigs in a PC made for 4 ? dose it catch fire and burst into flames like a tube guitar amp being cranked ? i am just curios if someone has already did it that means i don't have to ...but if not i have a couple of clunkers i am experimenting on ..????:

Re: why not 8 gigs of ram ?

well it is only going to use what it says it will handle I don't think it be wise to go over the maximum allowed ram I have only seen once incident so far where somebody added to much ram and it fried the on board video. I wouldn't waste my money either on more ram than whats needed. To use over 3.5gb's you are going to need a 64bit operating system.

Re: why not 8 gigs of ram ?

don't go over the maximum a mothercan handle thats just stupid

computers don't need over 4 gigs for gaming or whatever

The CPU will be the bottleneck for ram usage most of the time

unless you're using Core i7 ram thats overclocked to over 4 ghz will you be able to ue over 4 gb of ram while doing video encoding or something

Re: why not 8 gigs of ram ?

over 4gb of ram is for programs like CADD, and video and photo editing. I do a lot of scanning and photo editing. That is why I have 6gb of ram in my machine and the x64 bit OS.
