Windows freezes at beggining of startup

Greetings ,

A few months back my motherboard fried and I didn't know until a friend told me. So, at first I bought a power supply because I thought the computer was underpowered, so after a few weeks I bought a new motherboard because again my old one fried because of overheating, after that the computer started to work fine until I started to get blue screen errors while running, and computer started to freeze at beggining of boot up at the Intel pemtium 4 logo. So, after a few months I finally decided to fix my computer so I upgraded my RAM to 1GB and reformated my computer with a original version of Windows (I had the copy that came with computer Win pro) and it still didn't work, so then I realised that it only worked when the windows CD was in the CD-ROOM SO! it worked for a while but then it started to happen again. As a result, I called my uncle who works with computers and said that the hard disk was messed up, so I bought a new one that was 500 GB, 300 GB more than my last one and the problem was still happening! I called my uncle again and said that the hard disk I received had the same problem, I found it weird at first, but he said it wasn't impossible, I didn't give him much details so he might be incorrect. The computer only works sometimes and it freezes mostly during games, but it also freezes when using the internet or listening to music. I need help BAD!

My computer info from Everest:
Brand: Medion
Intel Pentium 4
3.0 processor
motherboard MSI MS 7046 (Medion OEM)
Computer RAM : 1024 MB
Bios type: Phoenix Award (06/06/05)
Power Supply: Zumax 400W max model:ZU400W INPUT: 115v 10A 60hz
230V 5A 50Hz
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS (512 MB)
Hard disk: SeaGate Barracuda ST350320AS SATA 500GB 7200.11
Hard disk driver update 7/1/01

All help will be greatly appriciated. Bare with me with my English since its my second language.

Re: Windows freezes at beggining of startup

when a m/b goes always check out the power supply because if that was the cause you will just burn the new one out
you are underpowered you need to be up here

Re: Windows freezes at beggining of startup

I am actually overpowered since the old power supply was 300W-350W can't really remember, but this one is 400W so I have extra power. and I just checked the temp and it was around the 40 degrees

Re: Windows freezes at beggining of startup

Quick question...when you loaded the OS on this rig, did you also load the Sata drivers at the F6 prompt?

Re: Windows freezes at beggining of startup

One other question, this motherboard (what I found) only supports Sata 1.5 standard and the newer Sata drives support the 3.0 standard, so you have to change a jumper on many of those Sata hard drives to be compliant with this 1.5 standard on the motherboard...did you do this?

Re: Windows freezes at beggining of startup

If this was my rig, here is what I would do:
Take off all the data on that drive that you want to keep by backing it up.

Insert the motherboard disk in the drive and see if there are Sata drivers on there to load on a floppy...If not, see if the hard disk utility that came with your hard disk has a Sata driver that you can put on a floppy. When done, exit and remove the OS disk and the drivers that are on the Floppy Disk.

See if your drive needs to have a jumper setting changed to work properly with your motherboard and if it does, then change that setting as per the hard drive instructions.

Enter the bios setup menu and make sure the boot area is set to:

CDRom - 1st
Floppy - 2nd
Hard Drive - 3rd

Partition and format the drive through your OS disk and load the Sata drivers at the F6 prompt as the OS disk begins. (look at the bottom of the screen as loading and tap F6 when appropriate) Then, when it stops, install those drivers. (if needed)

Load the OS and SP2 on there.

When you have the OS on there, load the Chipset drivers.
That should put you in good shape....well, I hope so anyhow. Like I mentioned, if this were mine, that is exactly what I would do in this case and hope it fixed the problem.

BTW, dai is correct about you being underpowered with this rig. That power supply is not big enough or have enough amps on the +12 to get the job done. I am not sure if this is the issue or the items I mentioned, so it might be a good idea to try another power supply in there first to save you from having to reinstall the OS. See if you can borrow one to try first.

Re: Windows freezes at beggining of startup

Thanks for all the help, I just tried going on the computer and now when windows is loading it flashes the blue screen and restart! it does it everytime. Safe mode didn't work since it restarted when it was done loading all the drives, I can still log on BIOS though. Ill try buying a bigger power supply 550W i guess. Thanks all! Ill post again if it didn't work :P
