Disappear 2GB of RAM

Hello ,

I 'm just a dummy MS Windows user and now I've got a RAM problem here. I am using 3GB of RAM which is DDR2 800 1GB x 3 but since I have accidentally clicked stand by instead of shut down for a couple of days, my machine shows 1GB of RAM in My Computer > Properties > General ... of course it is obvious that the performance becomes slow running with 1GB only. As all my RAMs are re-slotted again and checked as they all seem well slotted. Since I am using Window XP Pro SP2, Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, can somebody tell me what should I do next to get back full performance ...
Please help me ... thank you very much !

Rgds

Re: Disappear 2GB of RAM

Since you have three sticks of memory I recommend taking them all out and run the computer with one memory stick at a time. See if the computer is able to recognize it. Hopefully two memory sticks aren't damage.

Have you tried restarting your computer. When did you perform the reslotting. During the computer standby or did you shut it down..

I have done one stick each at a time and they all seem working well.

Of course, I have to reslot while the computer is shut down. Actually, the story goes like this. My computer used to happen like unable to start making beeps sounds. It is understandable as RAM problem , so I used to take out and re slotted them back. Then the computer restart back and everything's working fine for a couple of times. But I went for a few days trip while a week ago, I accidentally didn't shut down. When I got back from the trip, start my computer and I was surprised it was in Stand By mode, so I realized I didn't shut down. A few days after that incident, I started to notice that my computer is working slow ... I checked the RAMs and 2GB's gone. I doubt as if the memory sticks losing, so I reslotted again, but this time this won't work for me ... that's it.

So you used to get ram errors on startup and then have to reslot the ram to get the PC to boot? That is indicative of a RAM problem in some way. If you've tried the RAM separately and they boot the computer then it's possible you have a couple bad/dirty slots on the motherboard. But to be certain I'd slot one stick at a time and run memtest86 or some other RAM testing software. It's important that you run the tests on each stick separately in order to get accurate test results. If they all pass it's likely there is a problem with the other slots. Try blowing the RAM slots out with a can of compressed air and retry the RAM.
