Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
I bought an Ultra LSP550, it is 550-Watt obviously. I was disgusted at first because even though it had 4 SATA connectors, as I needed, it was a tight fit to get the 3 devices connected (the people who designed this computer did a terrible job, the 3 devices are all separate, side, middle and other side, and I have nothing nice to say about them). Anyways, I finally got it all situated and running.
The main problem is now that the fan is quite noisy. I am not sure how fast it is running, but at this amount of voltage (or so I presume because of the video card requirements), it is around 31dB. If someone wants to recommend a better one, I am buying at a local Tiger Direct store (please use .ca). I really don't want to go back for a third time (the first PSU didn't have everything I needed), but at this noise level, I may in fact need to. |

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
You might find this useful...
The power supply unit in today's modern computer assumes a role probably more critical than any other single component in your system. A poor PSU can also cause other components to fail in your computer. The right Brand names = Quality Some approved Brand names follow... Seasonic - any model Corsair - any model Thermaltake - "Toughpower" series only Coolermaster - "Real Power Pro" series only PC Power & Cooling - any model Silverstone - any model Unless you are not into some serious gaming a 650 watt or higher will take care of your needs...PCI-E requires 26 amps at 12 volts. That's a 650W...Quality...PSU. If you are a serious gamer a 750 Watt, or a little higher will be all that you would need. Power Supply Information and Selection |

I was looking at this one. It was on the list of recommended ones. I was going to get it from Tiger Direct, they have it in their catalog. I think I really have no other choice. It's so loud I can still just hear it at 4.5 meters away. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I had to return it once because it didn't have what I needed. Now I'm going to have to return it again because it sucks. I hope this one won't take as long, if it has 6 SATA power connectors, it should be in 3 separate groupings. This one was in two, and because of the ridiculously bad mounting, I had to stretch the SATA connector so much that it's crooked. Last edited by darksteel88; 01-25-2009 at 04:13 PM. |

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
It is this HP computer:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...roduct=3692730 It is basically: 2 500GB HD (Seagate) XFX 9800GT video card (installed today) 3GB Ram Q6700 CPU I have upgraded the video card to an XFX 9800GT, and the minimum power requirements are 400W. After using the PSU for a while, and I thoroughly unpleasant with the noise it is making. It is a budget gaming CPU, as I am playing games from COD4, to MS, to even Crysis. I was able to run Crysis on High with some AA on without any lag. The recommended settings are High for it now. At this rate, I plan to go and get another PSU. However, with the crappy help I've gotten, I'm getting all the help I can. My friend recommended the company of the other PSU I listed, and both that one and the 500W one are on the list for great PSU. I am thinking to stick to the 610W one because it is recommended for gaming. I can't get it until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest, so just keep on giving the recommendations, I really appreciate it. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...7723&CatId=106 That is what I plan on purchasing ATM. I need to get it from that store because it is where I purchased this one. I may look at another store that has it if they don't have any in stock. Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
Take a look at this baby, it has all you would need and should be very quiet and it is a steal after MIR: (750 PC Power & Cooling) (check Canada price)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...721&CatId=2533 Don't know if your particular store has it in stock, but worth a look.

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
500w is too small it's running at or near 100% that's why it's loud and running like that it will not last very long. at least 650w for a 9800GT the Corsair 650TX is about the best out there for the price at the moment > http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...orsair%20650tx
Or for the same price the 750TX http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...38609&csid=_23 ** I do like Tumbleweeds suggestion better the PC Power & Cooling units are very nice I have 2** Last edited by wrench97; 01-25-2009 at 04:43 PM. |

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
This is what I'm looking at now then.
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...47721&csid=_23 It looks like it will work, I'll probably have a word with my tech teacher at school tomorrow and see what he thinks. A little frustrated, but 750W, good brand, it should all work out. |

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
Yes. It is solid with a rebate though, so no worries. Didn't expect to spend this much, but trial and error. Red one is Crossfire edition, I read it off the box and my friend found out too, he almost bought it.
If someone wants to recommend, I need it to be for gaming, so like 600-800W, around $120 CAD, and please use tigerdirect.ca Last edited by darksteel88; 01-25-2009 at 05:29 PM. |

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
You simply won't beat that baby for that price. IMHO, the best of the best are either the PC Power & Cooling or Seasonic. For my personal choice, I would purchase that PC Power unit in this case, I somehow got the Tiger Direct US site for the original price instead of the Canadian site, but have removed the US price from my earlier post.
Come to think if it, that price in the US is so good, might just pick up an extra one or two of those to have on hand.

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
For the two PC Power and Cooling (610 and 750W), how much difference would I notice. My friend is strongly recommending I get the more expensive one, but I find it rather odd that my PSU is more than my graphics card.

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
For ten bucks, what the heck. Should you ever decide to upgrade your video card, you'd be happier having the higher wattage and amperage.

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
I have a concern paying more for the PSU than the video card, but I suppose it's worth it to get the 750W for 150 or so.
When I went into this, I didn't want to spend too much cause I don't have a job and thought I had only a couple hundred in the bank (16 and I'm using allowance). Surprisingly, I ended up having almost a grand in there. I'm going with a recommendation from not only this site, but a friend who has this PSU to get the 750W PC Power & Cooling one http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...7717&CatId=106 Unless someone has a valid opinion between when I go tomorrow, or my friend/teacher tells me otherwise, or the store doesn't have it, that's what I'll get. Thanks for the help. |

Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
I looked at that one. It APPEARS as thought it is the same, but it is not. That one is for crossfire, and the black one is for SLI. My friend almost purchased the red one, he was thinking it was for SLI, just like it says on tiger direct. However, look at the picture on the box and it says crossfire ready.
I hope I can chat with my friend today to see if he is using it. If he is, I am definitely going to get that one. He is SLI 2 295's I believe, not sure if he has both currently, but he has at least one. If he can use that and have no complaints, it will be more than enough more my rig, which I guarantee isn't nearly as expensive or powerful as his. I am going to be going down to TD later tonight to switch it. I will be going around 7PM EST, so anyone can help me out, give me suggestions etc. I should probably figure out a secondary in-case they do not have this one. I am willing to spend money in the high end category, for something like a 750 which I plan on getting, though I don't need the last category for sure, too much money. Re: Bought a new PSU but it is too loud
BTW, the Corsair one does not have a P4 to motherboard pin, and I am definitely using one right now.
I am using: P4 to motherboard 24 Pin to motherboard 6pin to PCIE 3x SATA (all far away from each other, 6 connectors is best cause it will most likely be 3 wires of 2 each which will be a lot easier to deal with) I also have a Personal Media Drive Bay that uses a 4pin molex, but I decided to take out the connection, it was running in the middle of where everything was happening, and to be honest, I will probably never use the thing anyways, so I just decided I would toss that cable out of the case, no harm done. One problem with this one is that 2 devices are connected by SATA that is not so great. It is stretched as far as possible and I didn't even think it would connect, the connector itself is at like a 45 degree angle to the connection. |
