[SOLVED] Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

Hey This is my first post, Ever since I built my rig last year its been automatically powering down completely (all the fans shutting off) as soon as i manually change the ram voltage.

This is really bad since the mobo auto sets the ram voltage at 1.8v when its meant to run at 2.1 making it insanely unstable and it wont run at its stock speed of 800mhz at 4-4-4-15 timings without completely freezing the computer

Specs
e6750 @ 3.2ghz
8800gt sli 650/1592/920
2gb OCZ platinum edition DDR2 6400
Atrix 550w Psu
Thermaltake truepower express 250w dedicated VGA Psu

Please help me fix this problem guys ive had it for over a year now

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

Quite simply, I think this is your issue:

Atrix 550w Psu
Thermaltake truepower express 250w dedicated VGA Psu

In the configuration you have, I would buy a good 850 watt power supply and let it rip. I suggest one of the following if you so choose to look at that option:

Seasonic – Any Model
Corsair – Any Model
PC Power & Cooling – Any Model
Thermaltake – “Toughpower” Series Only
Coolermaster – “Real Power Pro” Series Only

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

I know the psu would seem to be a problem , but it has more than enough juice for what im running. The dedicated vga psu is handling most of the graphics usage (the main psu is only pushing out 75 watts each to the pci express ports) and i only have one dvd drive and one hard drive, No add-inn cards either.

The comp has been automatically shutting down even before i added the second card anyway.. and i can turn any other voltage as high as i like on anything else

Bios flash? i really dont want to have to do that and ruin my mobo

The Ram definately isnt faulty either as i have tried 3 different sets with the mobo

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

Oh i forgot, this might help.. if i keep trying to boot the computer when the ram voltage is 2.1 eventually it will start up and boot after about 10 minutes of turning on and off and runs completely stable, but if it is rebooted or turned off the same thing will happen again

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

I still think it is your power supply setup and if you are in an sli configuration, I am more concerned about that issue, but you have to decide that. However, we can look at other possibilities.

I just want to be sure the way you wrote the specs.....you are using an sli option, aren't you?? If so, use only one card to test.

That being said, have you tried to bump your ram voltage up in very small increments instead of a big jump, then if it is stable, move it up a bit more?

Has the board ever been stable since you built it?

You mentioned you tried three different sets of ram and that is fine and well. Have you tried only one stick at a time and if that does not work, then try another stick in there and try it by only populating one ram slot at a time?

Talk to me about video cards, do you have a spare or could you borrow one lower than an 8800 that does not take this much power to try in there? BTW, you do have all the power leads hooked up to the video card(s), don't you?

Need to hit the sack, but will try to revisit this issue again in the morning.

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

Yes, They are in SLI configuration but I used a single card configuration until recently when i got my second 8800. same issue still, also i have tried it with an 8600gt which doesnt need an external molex and It still does the same thing

I just found out that it works fine up to .175+v and after that it auto shuts down, could be a safety feature? .(175+v is not enough for it to be stable at 800mhz)

Yes i have tried the RAM in every configuration and one stick, I think the reason it is unstable is lack of voltage if i downclock it to 667mhz it runs fine 20hr blend test in orthos but for some reason if I bump the cpu from 3.0ghz to 3.2 it fails blend but not small ffts

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

go back to the stock speeds of the ram and cpu..see if the system becomes stable

It's not the PSU. It's the motherboard itself.

I have the same board on one of my computers that you have, and the board will not allow it without serious backdrops. That's why I have it running on "stock" speed/voltage.

I bought 4GB Corsair 1066 RAM for it, expecting to bump it a little bit, but the mobo doesn't let me. It caused the same problem as you have. It would let me go up to .185V and I'm running 700W PSU.

I tried the RAM on another board, a 750i and it worked just fine.

So your problem is in the mobo.

Re: Gigabyte 650i SLI board auto shutdown when manually changing ram voltage

Ok thanks, That would explain the problem. Ive finally managed to get it stable at stock speeds which is good enough for me

I was hoping a little ocing because these ram sticks are under warranty up to 2.2v so i bet i could push them up to 1066 4-4-4-12
thanks
