how to add new ram

I have a emachines t3265 which came with 1 512 chip and has 2 slots with maximum capacity of 1gb apiece.

If I want to add ram am I better off:

1. Adding a second 512 chip;
2. Adding a 1 gb chip to the empty slot (does it matter if the 2 chips are different capacities?);
or
3. Replacing the 512 with a single 1 gb chip.

Also, are there specific brands of RAM I want to get (or avoid)?
