DDR400 Specs .. what should I expect?

Hi all

just want to see if I am grabbing this from the right end of the stick .. I thought I knew but now not so sure

I bought 4 * 1GB DDR400/PC3200 184 pin no-name memories to upgrade a couple of my rigs to 2GB each.

When booting though I have difficulty in getting BIOS to go better than 266MHz or PC2100 and I am wondering whether I have grounds for complaint or I have just been hoodwinking myself .. my KVR400 Kingston, Transcend & Jetram seem to work faster.

The confusion came after downloading the Everest hardware diag and seeing that the memory was recognised as
Quote:
[ DIMM1: SHTYGD1L648F124400 ]

Memory Module Properties:
Module Name SHTYGD1L648F124400
Serial Number None
Module Size 1 GB (2 ranks, 4 banks)
Module Type Unbuffered
Memory Type DDR SDRAM
Memory Speed PC3200 (200 MHz)
Module Width 64 bit
Module Voltage SSTL 2.5
Error Detection Method None
Refresh Rate Normal (15.625 us), Self-Refresh
So Do I have DDR400 PC3200 or what ??

DDR(Double Data Rate) @ 200 in Everest is PC3200 400 Speed. I think that is what your asking?

Re: DDR400 Specs .. what should I expect?

I had always thought that DDR400 should run at 400MHz but these modules crash at 333MHz whilst they appear to be good at 266MHz.

Here are the speedsys results from tests on my 3GHz P4S800D board using

the suspect 2 * 1GB modules

here is a test of the 2 * 512MB KVR400 that I used

and here are the original memories that I was using 4 * 256MB KVR400

memory bandwidth of the 2 * 1GB modules is half the others and if left in auto mode will crash at post , require teaking in BIOS then if set to >266MHz I end up with a PC that is running but not booting, black screen. Have to power off and then back on quickly or it will do it again.

I reckon I have DUD ram .. and that is why I am trying to see if I have got my facts twisted or not

RAM info is in the top left hand corner just below the block about the processor

I have similar results for 2 other PC's .. running at 2.66GHz

Re: DDR400 Specs .. what should I expect?

I think there is something going on with the ram unrelated to speed what does CPUz report for speed on the 2 512 sticks it should also report 200Mhz as the base speed. And for the chip maker on the new sticks?

Re: DDR400 Specs .. what should I expect?

I am seeing FSB 200MHz .. haven't used CPUz .. looks like time I tried a new program .. are there any decent FREE tools that can do an analysis of hardware and give details .. Everest is the updated Aida32 program which is no longer updated .. Aida looked and did a lot more like benchmarking and stuff.

Can't tell you anything about the memories .. they are unknown mfr
label reads 1GB DDR-I 400MHz
chips are identified as 64X8 DDR P and unless one goes faulty to allow me to remove it from the board there is no way to check for other info underneath.

Re: DDR400 Specs .. what should I expect?

CPUz will give you the speeds and Manufacturer info.
200 bus speed DDR is 400mhz> With data being transferred 64 bits at a time, DDR SDRAM gives a transfer rate of (memory bus clock rate) × 2 (for dual rate) × 64 (number of bits transferred) / 8 (number of bits/byte). Thus with a bus frequency of 100 MHz, DDR SDRAM gives a maximum transfer rate of 1600 MB/s.
