Hi, I have been trying to install a new mobo and have found that my old psu has only 20 pins and a separate 4 pin plug. This seemed no problem until I tried to fit the extra 4 pins in but it does not fit, and the pins do not fit in. Apparently there is another socket on the mobo but this does not supply power to the rails, is this correct?

Re: 20 pin +4pin is wrong shape on PSU
The 4 pins square plug on a cable by itself is the ATX 12v. connector, it's for your cpu power and there will be a socket for it near the cpu. It'll have 2 yellow and 2 black wires.
There are 20 pin to 24 pin adapters, though with an older psu you could be better off getting a decent new one. Depends on what's in your system. Here's what they look like. http://www.xpcgear.com/20to24pinatx.html
