Installing Ram into Sony Vaio PCG 5B3P

Hi Guys,

I have a friend's laptop which he wants to add some more ram into. I have not done one that requires you to take the whole back of. I have only done the newer laptops with the little panel that you take off.

I was wondering if anyone has done one of these Sony ones or similar to it.

If anyone could give me a few tips on how to do it that would be much appreciated

Cheers,
Ross

Re: Installing Ram into Sony Vaio PCG 5B3P

No, I haven't done it with a Vaio.

But I have done it with an Asus Eee, which is a lot smaller. I'm guessing the Vaio would be easier.

Taking the whole back off is not a problem. Keep the cat away. Once the back is off, you are looking for basically the same thing you are already familiar with—a RAM pocket, WHICH MIGHT BE HIDDEN. So for you and others who might come here, I'll run through some things you already know:—

(1) It should be easy, easy, easy. Like changing a lightbulb. Uh—just more scary.
(2) When you have opened up your access, be sure you are looking at the right thing. In the Eee, for example, there is something that looks so much like where you want to go, except there is a screw there. There is no screw on the RAM panel, but there IS a protective piece of heavy black anti-static film HIDING it. So make sure your brain is turned on. FULLY on.
(3) Remove the old RAM and place it on some appropriate surface, facing the very same way it faced in the machine. There is a VERY GOOD POSSIBILITY that you have to release a couple of gadgets that clasp the RAM in for a tight fit. Expect that there are.
(4) Your new RAM fits SECURELY into the slot. Now, "SECURELY" is the operational word here. Basically you gently push it in—with a sledge hammer. If you are as careful as you want to be, you won't get it in. This is very very easy, but first time you are caught between CAUTIOUS and FORCEFUL. (It occurs similarly in other aspects of our lives as well.)
(5) If there are claspers, they will snap into position when you have it right.
(6) If it feels MUSHY, it is not properly in. Don't wiggle it, but do make SURE it is in.
(7) Now, here is what you really want to know: job done, turn on system: NOTHING. BLACK SCREEN. "Oh NO!!! I've WRECKED MY FRIEND'S COMPUTER!!!"
— Ha ha! No, you haven't. You didn't get the RAM in right. NO PROBLEM. You have to go back and try again. My first time, I had to try FIVE TIMES.

If there is anything you might do wrong, it is failing to get that RAM in all the way, just as tight as it should be. Look carefully at the RAM you remove when you begin.

No fears. After you have stopped sweating and started breathing again, you'll say, "Gee, that was FUN!!"
(I promise.)

Re: Installing Ram into Sony Vaio PCG 5B3P

Thanks for that, i kinda knew some of it. I am just wondering how to get the back off. I have taken all of the visable screws out. At the back towards the screen it doesn't want to lift up as easy as the front and i don't want to foce it and break it. Just thought somebody might no if there is a certain spot that might have a little clip or something.

Cheers

Check if the keyboard comes up. As I recall, Sony's keyboard pops up with little clips from the top (after removing screws from underneath). After that, there should be some screws under the keyboard.

Ahh sweet. Thanks bud. The ram slot was under the keyboard so you don't even have to take the back off. Just undo the screws that hold the keyboard down.
