I am running windows xp sp2 pentium 4 2.40 ghz 512mb ram 233 gb hard drive. I hit the power button the lights com on as to start up but then cd-rom light starts flashing and the computer freezes and will not load. I can try to hold the button in but this does no good and then i hit reset button no good. I can go to the back of the computer and turn off the switch and then turn it back on and the go to the front and hit the power button and it starts. This happens when it sits for a period of time. This started to happend every now and then and now it is every day.

Re: computer power start
I have something extremely similar happening. I mean I did have, but I removed a CD-RW and the problem ceased. Your CD-ROM lights flashing suggest pretty much the same problem. Try disconnecting the CD and see what happens. Once it is disconnected, try at least two start-ups to be sure.
But, even if that helps out, it does not necessarily mean the CD-RW is at fault. It could be the start button itself. It could be the voltage. I'm working on my own, and I'm glad I've made some progress, but I'm not throwing the CD-RW away—because I think that actually there is nothing wrong with it. I think it merely acted like a warning signal and LOCATED the problem for me. Good luck. |

Re: computer power start
Hi, bjobie. I think the CD-RW is still good because I am slow to blame hardware. In this case, I am especially slow, because (1) the CD-RW is new—it was stored brand new in a box until 2 weeks ago; and (2) I am working with it on my first self-built system, my first 64-bit system, my first SATA+PATA system, and my first AHCI system (which are all the same computer). I'll gladly post back. First I have to somehow get my feet up above all these alligators.
