9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

Hi,

Just bought a new rig and went for the 9800GT (Asus TOP version)...

It was working fine until the pipes on my liquid cooling for the CPU started acting up so I opened up the case and tidied up a little bit... plugged it all back in, everything was fine until nVidia told me my graphics card wasnt getting enough power...

Tried countless different combinations of powering the damn thing, using molex to pci-e converters, different pci-e plugs on the PSU, unplugging different optical/hdd's on the system - stupid error message keeps coming up.
PLEASE HELP!
I've updated drivers, taken the graphics card out and made sure theres only one pci-e female slot.... urgh, its very annoying... :(

My specs are:

1000w Antec PSU
Asus Mobo P5Q3 Deluxe
2 x 2GB DDR3 RAM
Intel Core2Quad Q9550 (not overclocked or anything)
3 HDDs running SATA.. (no raid or anything like that)
1 optical DVD
No USBs plugged in or anything which might steal some of the 1000w...

The PSU has many rails, tried multiple rails to a converter as I said - no avail... tried using one of their stock rails which come direct from PSU, no avail... tried one of their PCI-E output ports... again, no freaking avail...

Any advice?

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

That PSU should easily power your rig. Just to be sure it is fine (even if new), what voltages does the bios list? There are times (and from Antec) that I have purchased some supplies that did not perform well, even if new.

What do you mean by AUX? The AUX coming from the PSU? I dont think thats plugged into anything.... Could be wrong tho... would that make the difference? Perhaps that was plugged in before but since I took everything out then I may have forgotten to put back in... hmm..

I will get the voltages and post asap.

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

Yeah thats definately plugged in - its an 8 pin connection right?

And my voltages from bios seem normal...:

CPU - 1.2V
3.3v - 3.29V
5v - 5.16V
12v - 11.984V

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

Just a thought...
I got a twin molex to pci-e adapter with the graphics card - am I better off using that and using TWO rails or one rail... or am I better of using one of the PCI-e 6+2 which Antec provide?

Looking at the actual pins in the plastic, the adapter only has 5 out of the six pins, the antec provided PCI-e 6+2 has all 6 on the bit which goes into the graphics card, but the output from the PSU only shows 4 pins....

Sorry to double/triple post - but...
Just noticed that the graphics card fan makes a hell of a lot of noise randomly, checked temperature and seems to be up to 70oC... :S

Have you blown the dust out of that fan in the graphics card?

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

I was using liquid cooling for the processor and fan cooling for the gpu... but only just taken out the liquid cooling because it was getting in the way and annoying me...

now im just using standard cooling for both CPU and GPU... fans.

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

Do you have a front fan pulling in cool air and a rear fan pulling warm air out of the case. If not, then you need that as a minimum.

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

Yeah - have 2 fans taking it in from the front, and one large fan at the back exhausting it, and also one at the top exhausting it..
like i said - this error only started happening recently... no idea why...

I reckon its a fault with the graphics card?

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

If it only happened recently, try a system restore to a time before your error and see if that works! That might indicate a driver or software issue that is causing this if it stops the problem.

The error you see indicates a power problem, but with the PSU you have, that should not be an issue, unless it is faulty. If I had a new 1000 watt power supply and got that error, I would be talking to Antec about an RMA if it isn't too old.

Have you considered trying (even a smaller one like a 750 or 850 power supply in there just to test it with a different PSU? Do you have a friend who would let you try theirs?

Re: 9800GT not getting enough juice.... :|

Had a brainwave when you said to try system restore - i checked windows update and it seems that windows decided to download the latest 180 release for me... :)
Downgraded back to 175, and now seems to be all ok :) fingers crossed...
thanks for your help!
