A friend has a desktop machine that has had troule starting up, lately, both CPU & system fan spin a cpl of seconds and then stop. I replaced the power supply with new unit & still get same results. Any suggestions ? I'm not sure of the processor, but it's an ASUS P5VDC MB with 512MB of memory.
Thanx in advance |

Re: Desktop doesn't power up, PS replaced
Is it a P5VDC-MX or is it in a OEM PC like Sony or HP?
Are you using a video card on the onboard video? What PSU did you put In? If it has a motherboard speaker pull the ram out and see if it beeps at you. |

Re: Desktop doesn't power up, PS replaced
Thanx for the response.
The machine is based on a 'build it yourself' case, no brand name, and is an MX, as you suggest. It's using the onboard video, and there is no builtin speaker, rather an external one. The PS that I installed is marked as a 500WATX12, which is the same marking that the original one had. Only installed devices are DVD & HDD, 500W seems like overkill, but that's what it had. We're working in Israel, so it's 220V input, but the replacement is made for the local market here. As for any beeps, there's no activity at all, as I said, the fans stop after abt 3 seconds, and nothing further happens. For what it's worth, the green LED on the MB stays lit as long as the machine is plugged in, going out if the cord is disco'd. Rgds, Joe |

Re: Desktop doesn't power up, PS replaced
I recently had this problem with the computer I'm currently using. After replacing memory, motherboard, cpu fan and psu it ended up being a bad power switch. Luckily the warranty was still good, just ended up being a 2 week headache.

I would add the Motherboard speaker and pull the ram to see if it beeps
as a visual reference for a motherboard speaker> http://www.clearpc.ca/catalog/images/speaker.JPG |

Re: Desktop doesn't power up, PS replaced
Thanx for the suggestions. I used some compressed air cleaner all "over, under, around & through" the cooler, CPU, system fan, tried shorting the 2 power pins on the MB to bypass the switch, no change in the symptoms. I'll just have to advise them to have the MB and CPU checked in a shop.
