Ram help

Just bought one stick of 1 gb ddr and have a dual 256 ddr already in the cpu, for some reason i can only use the single or the dual not both together, ideas?

What Model is your HP?
What Brand and part number Ram did you buy?
You should be running the ram in matched pairs to achieve dual channel mode which is superior to running more ram in single channel.
