Basically this is a thread questioning what I can do with out the aid of getting more RAM (Which I think may only be the way) BUT....
Im using this machine for Producing Music and the PC Spec Sucks Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz 512mb of ram I just cant afford any upgrades, Im too ghetto for any of that Wondering if theres a way to boost my ram through a programme or tweaking the PC to get more out of it? Or can you also allot some of your HDD to act as RAM ??? Any responses, Will be greatly appreciated. Is a big problem as I need to get some music out there to earn money for parts hehe Cheers

Re: Ram ????
Windows automatically assigns part of the hard drive as a pagefile (virtual memory). It operates much the same way as RAM, but is significantly slower. This can be adjusted by right clicking My Computer selecting Properties, then clicking the Advanced tab then clicking Settings under the Performance category, and then clicking the Advanced tab again. The virtual memory section will be at the bottom of the window.
As for a program that will "boost" the ram...there are programs that will free up RAM (FreeRAM-XP, etc..) but it won't ever get more than 512MB. IMO, your best bet, if you are using something like Windows XP, is to go to a different operating system...one which uses less resources. Something like linux would be good if you could figure out how to use it because it would leave more of your RAM available for audio processing.

Re: Ram ????[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
That should be alright, or you can set it to let windows automatically set it by choosing "System managed size".
Like I said, it is slower than regular RAM, and I'm not sure how well it will work for audio editing. The program I told you about, will clear up RAM that is no longer being used by programs. It will not increase the physical amount of RAM that you have.

Re: Ram ????[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
First of all, you can only use what you got. The more RAM you got, the faster your PC will be.
Secondly, increasing your paging file WILL NOT speed your PC up in any way shape or form. The reason PC's with little RAM slow down is because they are actually using the paging file - the hard disk becomes a massive bottleneck. Ideally you want to prevent Windows from having to use the page file. To do this, you can do one of two things; buy more RAM (which is cheap these days) OR make sure every program and background process you do not need is shut down. There are various tutorials on this dotted around the net, but I'm too rich and my PC too powerful to bother searching :P Last edited by dai; 10-22-2008 at 02:21 PM. Reason: language |

Re: Ram ????[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Well there isn't much you can do to be honest. Nothing you do with the virtual memory is going to speed your computer up by much.
Like I said, best place to start is by slimming down your computers startup and getting rid of any unnecessary processes that are running. This might help. |
