Suprised Kingston HyperX - Does auto option = underpowered?

Hey,

I have a question relating to the possability that Kingston HyperX DDR2 800mhz memory when defaulted to auto in bios results in the setting to 667mhz.

Is that correct?

What started all this enquiry was the purchase of 2x 2gig Kingston HyperX (KHX6400D2K2/4G) and the 101 blue screens which followed. This led me to investigate possabilities, which showed 667mhz as the mem speed in bios. Keep in mind this is a new mobo after a failed bios update (due to the purchase of my new cpu E8500 a few days ago :/). I went searching for configurations and found conflicting results. the timings were consistent, but the voltage was not. Kingston site = 1.8v while the Kingston memory sticker on the stick reports 2V. Neither auto options or manual adjustment to 2V fixed my issues. I have concluded that this HyperX could be faulty and am looking to take it back to the shops tomorrow for replacement.

I then changed back to my original Kingston HyperX (KHX8500D2/1G) (4gig with 4x 1gig sticks). The system appears to be stable, no more blue screens, though i appear to have an interesting double boot which i have not seen before.

My current 4x 1g HyperX shows type: DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399mhz) - (DDR2-800), This information was taken from PC Wizard 2008. Does this mean that my machine is not running memory at 800mhz?? Or does it imply that due to my dual channeling, that 1 memory stick runs at 400mhz while the other runs at 400mhz resulting in 800mhz??

I have always put memory into the computer and never thought anymore of it. But now I find myself in deep water when it comes to this sort of thing.

Anyones imput on this matter would be greatly appreaciated.

A few computer specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3166mhz
Asus P5K-E motherboard
4 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM (which i am sure is meant to be 800mhz) HyperX (KHX8500D2/1G)
NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTX
Vista Ultimate 64x

As you can read, I am totally confused on this matter *sigh*

Thank people in advance for their replies.

KR

Re: Kingston HyperX - Does auto option = underpowered?

You might try inserting one stick of ram and then reboot. At reboot go into the Bios and set the timing manually. I run a similiar M/B and the same Kingston ram with no probs. The ram is 400 but is read twice = 800.

Re: Kingston HyperX - Does auto option = underpowered?

set the ram at 400 it reads it 400 on the up and 400 on the down making it 800
you have it o/clocked that's why you are receiving the blue screens
when you post your specs include the power supply brand and wattage
it is the most important part of your specs

Thumbs Up Re: Kingston HyperX - Does auto option = underpowered?

Thanks guys for the advise. I will attempt to set the 1 stick at 400 and see how I go.

Power Supply = Thermaltake 850W :)

As for overclocking the ram. It is meant to be 800mhz, but reads 667, so an increase would put it where it should be?

*Update*

I have taken the p5k-e back to the shop and exchanged it for a Gigabyte Ep35-Ds4P. The tech guy there checked my settings on my comp and did a mem test. The memory didnt fail, cpu didnt fail which resulted in the assumption that combatability may be at fault or mobo faulty.

When returning home, I had the exact same issues while installing vista ultimate.... with my KHX6400D2K2/4G. Either default 667mhz or upped to 800mhz, the little sucker came up with all sorts of errors (error reading source, verify installation source), Point to note, yes I have legit vista ultimate and there is not even a scratch or smudge mark on it.

Again back to the drawing board I put my KHX8500D2K2/2G in the machine and saw the auto option put my speed up to 1066mhz.... after closer inspection, I realised that this was a 8500 which has a 1066 mhz mem speed which i thought was 800. I had been setting them to 800 before which I believe may have contributed to the failues like the 6400. I am convinced that the memory is not faulty but rather I need to set the right figures across the board.... oh figures where for art though??

So far for the 6400, I have tried the following settings; 800mhz : 5,5,5,15 at 2.0V / 2.2V / 1.8V. Neither of the options will provide a stable computer and all fail during the extraction processes of installing vista.

I am at a bit of a loss as to where to go from here as neither Kingston website nor sticker on kingston stick holds stable timings/voltage. I will be placing the ram into a P5QL Pro motherboard, 2.66 Dual core, 160gig hdd 7200rpm, and average graphics card + a 450W power supply. Any ideas on what settings I am possibly missing? This system will be passed onto my dear mother, so it has to be stable :)

For now my machine appears to run smoothly and I am happy so far. I am yet to test the limits with benchmarking and some heavy duty games on my machine but expect good results.

Thanks for the advise so far, and welcome any more suggestions
