Wont Boot on
I recently purchased some new ram, and i installed it.. loaded computer and it did not detect new ram, so i opened it up again (With computer off) put the new ram in backwards from where it was loaded it.. and the light turned green faintly and fan on.. then poof died
did it again.. light green poof gone again.. fan doesnt even turn on even shorter life and poof gone Doesnt even have enough power to load anything on monitor So i take out new ram and just the default ram that came with computer in it, still not working. I changed the ram on the carpet wearing socks, i heard that could of fried something? What do i need to do? Buy a new batery for something? Power Suply? its a dell computer Forgot to add , the first time i put in the ram the computer didnt detect it, so i think i put it in backwards then when i took it to the floor (Carpet) to put it in the other way it wouldnt turn on. My friend said he thinks i short circuited it by putting it in backwards and turning it on Last edited by mikeg123435; 10-17-2008 at 09:55 PM. |

Re: Wont Boot on
Hi,
Welcome to TSF. You should always ground yourself before working on a PC. An ESD strap and touching a non painted part of the tower. http://www.esdproduct.com/ESD_Wrist_Strap.php Insert the old RAM back into the PC NOTE: RAM only goes in one way into the slots Clear the CMOS: Either jumpering the cmos jumper or There is a small battery on the motherboard about the size of a nickel. Remove the battery (CAREFULLY) for 1/2 hour, then reinstall the battery and see if it will POST. While you are in the case, check the power connections to the MoBo and all other devices. There is a chance you may have shorted out the mobo or powersupply. Bill |

So i figured i put it in backwards, so i put it in the other way and then thats when the computer would not turn on fully Light infront of computer turned on for a second or 2 and the power suply fan... then slowly turned off Maybe i need a new power suplY? Edit: anyone suggest anything else? I dont think i would be able to successfully do the bench test without breaking it worste >.< I un plugged everything and plugged it back in, now the fans seem to stay on but i dont think they are very loud, could barley tell they were on, but the button infront of computer doesnt i stay green like its on.. do i need a new motherboard? Update: Ok now both fans stay on without dying off, and i am able to open and close the cd drive thing when i press the button, but noting shows up on monitor and no green light is showing infront of the computer case, although there is a green light on the motherboard that is on. Im going to try to use this computer monitor then gonna mess around some more with the inside of the computer Sorry for all these post, seems i cant edit for some reason. Re: Wont Boot on
Wouldnt it not be the power suply since the dvd disc thing is still able to open, and the fans are working still.
Heres what i think now, im thinking maybe the mother drive is broken because i put the ram in backwards (By force) Sincce i discovered one of the clips (White clips on side of ram slot) is broken off. When i loaded it hte first time, i got some blue screen error, and ignored it for reasons i dont know, and i tried to re load it again before i took out ram. Then after that it wouldnt turn on anymore So either the ram got busted or motherboard, not sure about the PSU But if you think its the PSU i might give it a try, thanks for advice. Thanks for adding my previous post together too. |

Also if i was going to replace the motherboard how would i find one that will fit in my case and will be compatable with all my stuff So i should try a new power suply first? Did the power suply get damaged from me putting in ram wrong? Edit: What would be the best way to find a new power suply that will work with my stuff, dont want a super good one, just one that worked just as good as the one i had, just want it to have right voltage and such and cheap Edit: Im reading about ATX PFC and "standard" psu's 24 pin 20 pins and some stuff that could fry my mohter board, what would be best way to find out what mine needs where are these pins at on my psu Last edited by mikeg123435; 10-18-2008 at 03:42 PM. |

Re: Wont Boot on
cpu=central processing unit the one with the fan on top on the m/board
see if you can borrow a power supply to try in it agp= min of 18amps on the 12v+ line pcie= min 26amps being as you don't know what a cpu is can you get a friend who knows a bit more about computers to help you and show and explain things to you

Re: Wont Boot on
Got a new PSU and it still wont turn on
Dvd drive still opens and closes any suggestions? Edit: If i need a new motherboard do i need to get a dell one because all my components are? Also could it just be that my ram is dead? Will a computer not boot if the ram is dead? The motherboard light is green.. dvd drive opens and closes, but infront of the computer no green light. And nothing on my screen, maybe video card? Edit2: Maybe i killed the DIMMs on my ram? that will cause it to not boot? Last edited by mikeg123435; 10-28-2008 at 04:29 PM. |

Re: Wont Boot on
have you plugged in the aux power plug into the m/board
reset the cmos cmos reset turn the computer off remove the power lead from the back take the side off remove the cmos battery move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2 reinsert the battery put the side on replug in the power lead boot the computer there can be 2 solder points you touch with a screwdriver 2 pins you touch with a screwdriver or use a jumper a cmos clear switch or button there will be a diagram and instructions in your manual boot with the ram out and see if you get the bios beep codes
