Computer shuts down (Might be PSU)

Until recently machines has run fine playing any game (including crysis) I throw at it at high settings. Never before had it shut down while playing. I install Portal Prelude and while playing my comp shut down and wouldn't start up again. Right after it shut down I smelled smoke so I took out the power cord and opened the case. I felt the different components and the PSU felt incredibly hot. So is it my PSU that is to blame? The comp is self built and the specs are listed under my name. I'm wondering with the Nvidia 8800 Ultra if a 600w PSU is enough.

Ultra PSU = Weak

Its most likely the PSU at fault. I would replace it asap.

Lets hope it hasn't blown your mobo/cpu or any other parts along with it.

Re: Computer shuts down (Might be PSU)

Well after letting it cool down I was able to start it back up. But I really don't want to run it if it will shut down again. Do you have any suggestion as to which PSU I should get with my set-up?

Re: Computer shuts down (Might be PSU)

First of all, you need a bare minimum of a 650 watt power supply from one of the following to run your video card:

Seasonic – Any Model
Corsair – Any Model
PC Power & Cooling – Any Model
Thermaltake – “Toughpower” Series Only
Coolermaster – “Real Power Pro” Series Only
Silverstone – Any Model

If upgrading is on the horizon for you, then think even bigger yet. The power supply you have is very weak (even if new), so if you continue to purchase off brands like that, it will burn up other components of your rig.
