HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
I'm moving these entries in order to create this new thread. Here are previous comments:
ORIGINAL THREAD: eMachine will not turn on Posted by ruff702 View Post I have the same problem with my HP Pavillion 9800. I have not used it for two months, but it was fine the last time I tried it. Today it will not start. I've changed outlets and power cords but it still won't fire up. No sound whatever. We have had several severe thunderstorms in recent weeks, and I suppose it is possible there has been a power surge that caused a problem. I would expect this to affect the hard drive rather than the any other part of the computer, but I can't make any start. Is this a power supply problem or possibly something else? FROM WRENCH97: Do you get any lights on drives or the tower at all? Do you have access to a Digital volt meter? Also it's best to start a new thread so we can keep straight which problem we're replying to. NEW COMMENT: I get no lights on the drives or the tower. I plug it in, push the "on" button, and nothing happens. I don't have a digital volt meter. If I did, where would I use it for a test? __________________ Last edited by ruff702; 10-16-2008 at 03:59 PM. |

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
Look this over> Test your power supply with a multi meter
check the back of the psu(near where the power cord plugs into the pc) for a switch that changes the voltage settings from 115 to 230 if your in the U.S. it should be 115v or in the UK 230v or whatever your local voltages are. while your there male sure that there also isn't a on off switch on the power supply. |

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
Using HP's written support for Troubleshooting Power Supply Issues, I disconnected the cords from the PSU to all of the drives, and still there is no light or noise when I plug in the computer. I went on-line to HP's support chat, and after some discussion, I was informed that the PSU must be bad and must be replaced. HP no longer sells this PSU -- their number 0950-3971. The original was a 250 watt (max), Rancho HV with PFC, Bestec ATX-250-12v - 100-120VAC and 200-240VAC input, switch selectable, 50/60Hz total of 11 output connectors.
Do you see any alternative to buying this? If not, can you recommend an on-line supplier? |

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
Now I have a new problem. I chose the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 370 Watt. With discounts and free shipping, the price of the two you recommended was basically the same, and I chose the one with the higher wattage. It works, to the extent that the computer engine starts and I get the Windows XP start up screen, and it says Windows Loading, but it never finishes loading and never gets past the initial screen.
There were two problems in the installation. One was that my 2001 HP computer has a 20-pin motherboard connection, and the new PSU had a 24-pin plug. I separated the four pins on the end of the plug and left them dangling unconnected. I don't think that was part of the problem. The second problem was that my computer requires a second motherboard connection -- a very small three-pin plug right next to the 24-pin outlet. The problem is that there is no small three-pin plug with the new Silencer PSU, and so I have put nothing on those three pins. (The small plug on the old PSU had the lettering "pg.") Do you think my new PSU is incompatible with my computer, or is there a way to make a connection on the three-pin outlet. Thanks in advance. |

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
I get the feeling this is a PIII and not a P4 model if so my bad the older PSU's are proprietary and you can't use a standard atx. Is it a PIII?

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
I went back and looked over my research this is the the stock supply diagrams I came up with it shows a 20 pin and a separate 4 pin which you should have on the new PSU??

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
The link you sent looks like the PSU that was in the computer originally, although even in the diagram I don't see the three-pin connector. My computer is a PIII. But the new PSU Silencer 370 doesn't have that 3-pin plug for the motherboard. Looks like I need to contact Newegg or the manufacturer and return it for the right one.

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
Here's what oztechnology, maker of the PSU, tells me (nothing's wrong). I think I don't believe them:
Your issue is probably not a power supply or power issue. If you have power to the startup screen, the PSU is probably okay. I would look into the memory or some other hardware for issues. You may also have a software problem. To test your memory, I recommend MemTest. You can download a bootable copy from memtest.org. |

Re: HP Pavillion 9800 Won't Start
Today, all is well. After sleeping on this problem overnight, the computer decided to start this morning. First, it felt it had to run the Check Disk, which took a very long time, and then it announced everything was fine. All components seem to work. Thanks for your help.
