Upgrading ram, now won't boot

Hello, I'm new to the board. I found a thread on here about someone having a similiar issue to mine but the replies didn't solve my problem so I thought I would try myself.

I have a Compaq Presario SR1033WM with 512 ram. I bought a new stick of ram today (1 gig), I installed the new stick (leaving old one in seperate slot) and the computer wouldn't boot. Reading through here I don't believe my new stick is not compatible, this is it: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1155071451493 The dude at best buy said it would work. So once it didn't boot I shut it off and made sure they were both correctly in the slots and then tried again and it still wouldn't boot. I also smelled a slight burning smell. I tried taking out the new stick and booting, same problem, then taking out old stick, then switching them around, still won't boot. The power will come on, front light comes on and the fan will start but it won't actually boot. I've also made sure all the power cords to and from the psu are connected and everything seemed fine.

So did installing it fry my power supply somehow? If someone could please help me I would greatly appreciate it!

Re: Upgrading ram, now won't boot

I happened to have an extra power suppy around and hooked that up and it still does the same thing. It will make the fan move but it won't actually boot up.

Re: Upgrading ram, now won't boot

Try with just the old stick in 1st slot. If it boots then remove old stick and insert new stick into the SAME slot. If that works insert old stick into second slot.
Some motherboards have slight prob with 667 ram, sometimes the ram timing has to be manually set. If that doesn't work you need to check the specs i.e. voltage.

Re: Upgrading ram, now won't boot

I've tried butting old stick in both slots, new stick in both slots, and combinations of these. No change.

Re: Upgrading ram, now won't boot

It appears your system uses DDR PC 2700 Not DDR2 PC 5300, Normally they won't fit in the slots without something breaking is the link you provided to the ram you purchased correct? > http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...io%20SR1033WM#

I would try resetting the CMOS put the old stick back in and see if it will boot.>
See the bottom of the page for instructions on clearing> http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...product=415186

Post back and let us know if it will now post.
