New Ram running too slow
I have an ASRock 775Twin HD-TV Mobo. I had 1gb corsair ram pc 4200 533mhz. I wanted to speed my sytem up a bit and so I decided that I would get more ram. I got a 2gb stick of corsair pc 5300 ( was told that this would downgrade to 533 when alongside the other ram). Now below is the info I got from crucial memory website. It says that the max ddr2 mem is 4gb. Hence I got 2gb to make total of 3gb didnt think I needed 4gb, however, my pc is running extremely slow, freezes with simple apps like internet or media players Then continues, plus it only recognised 1.9gb. so I took out the old 1gb memory, and it is still running slow and still only recognises 1.9gb. what can I do?
Graphics Support: PCI Express x16 Chipset: ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Error Detection Support: Non-ECC only Max Component Density: 1024 Max Unbuffered DDR SDRAM: 4096MB Module Types Supported: Unbuffered only Supported DRAM Types: DDR and DDR2 SDRAM USB Support: 2.x Compliant 184-pin DIMM Banking: 2 (2 banks of 1) 240-pin DDR2 DIMM Banking: 2 (2 banks of 1) DDR2 SDRAM Frequencies: PC2-4200 and PC2-5300 Max Unbuffered DDR2 SDRAM: 4096MB |

Re: New Ram running too slow
Hello and welcome to TSF...
First of all, you should test your RAM memory both old and new ones... You can test RAM sticks with MemTest86+ : http://www.memtest.org/ Test RAM modules one-by-one to check if new is failty or maybe not compatible with old RAM stick that you have... Hope this will help you mate... Report back please... |

Re: New Ram running too slow
the rest of the ram is probably allocated to the video by the bios
if you have ide drives check they are running in dma mode and have not dropped back to pio mode check your cpu temp in the bios

I'm having to GUESS here, that your ram is DDR2.
Didn't Crucial recommend that you install your ram in pairs? DDR2 works best when installed in "Matched Pairs". (DDR can be installed in single sticks, but they should all be the same speed and type) If the mobo it looking for a matched pair and you give it just one stick, your ram performance will take a horrible hit. I never install any ram (DDR2) unless it's in matched pairs. Go to a computer store like Comp USA and you'll see DDR2 ram that's sold two sticks to a package. Those sticks are Matched, for peak performance. I have two matched pairs of ram in my own computer. The first matched pair is two 1 gig sticks and the second matched pair is two 512meg sticks,,,,for a total of 3 gigs of DDR2 Ram. All my ram is from the same company and it's all the same speed. That's all my XP OS will address anyway. Good Luck to you, The Shadow

If you look at the spec below, can you tell me if i can have 2x2gb DDR2? as it says max supported ddr2 4gb. coz then as you say, i may as well get 2 of the same (pairs) 184-pin DIMM Banking: 2 (2 banks of 1) 240-pin DDR2 DIMM Banking: 2 (2 banks of 1) DDR2 SDRAM Frequencies: PC2-4200 and PC2-5300 Max Unbuffered DDR2 SDRAM: 4096MB |

Re: New Ram running too slow
JuanitoD, according to the manual for your motherboard, while it does contain two slots for 184-pin DDR and two slots for 240-pin DDR2, you CAN'T INSTALL BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. Doing so can damage the motherboard.
See section 2.5 (pg 16) of your motherboard manual |
