Help with upgrading RAM

Hi fellas, I recently bought a 512MB DDR RAM stick for my HP workstation xw5000. Before I had 2 256MB DDR sticks so I wanted to upgrade to near enough 1GB.

When I put the new 512MB stick in with the 256MB sticks my computer coms up with "Memory loading error" I tried using only the 512MB and 1 256MB stick and it said "Memory mismatch errror". I know the new RAM works because I have it in now on its own.

I've tried a BIOS upgrade (no difference) and putting the RAM in different slots.

Help would be much appreciated

Re: Help with upgrading RAM

What's the problem? You said "I know the new RAM works because I have it in now on its own.". If you are trying to mix the 256 and 512, you probably can't. You would need to check the book/online for your specific model to see what the mix/match possibilities are, but, I'm guessing you can't mix them or they have to be the same size and speed.

Re: Help with upgrading RAM

yeah I am mixing them, thats probably the problem. I'll buy another 512MB stick and see if that works.

Thanks for the reply

Re: Help with upgrading RAM

np. I'd check the specs on the board first just to make sure and see if there is a requirement that the clock speeds on the two need to be the same - just to make sure.
