Confused computer not turning on :S

as my title says, my computer is not turning on, the keyboard lights are on (num lock and caps lock) and the external hard drive has its blue light on (this one turns on when the computer turns on) and this all occurs when i press the power button on the computer. there is a high pitched sqeeky sound when i turn it on coming from the back. from what i remember its call a PSU? anyways the noise is coming from that unit at the back where i enter the power cable [sorry if i'm not using the correct terminoligy] another thing is that its not just evident from the screen but the blue and red lights on the base unit where the power button is does not turn on. the past few days before it took a good few minutes to jsut turn on (loading and everything else is still fairly quick though) but now i left it on for about 4 hours and nothing so i'm assuming it is completely off.

please help me with this
ehab

P.S should i make a new thread about a RAM enquiry? or is it still ok to add it to this thread?

Re: computer not turning on :S

The problem definitely can be caused by a faulty power supply. And yes, it's called a PSU (Power Supply Unit) for short. See if you can get hold of a known working one to test with.

It's your choice whether to make a new thread about a different problem or not, there are no rules against it here.

Re: computer not turning on :S

thanks for the help underclocker. just curious, does any power supply work or is it specific to the computer? i had a problem before with my PSU and it turned out to be the actual wire but obviously it can't be that again because its been working for about a year now with no problems. before it used to just turn off after about a minute. oh and after i posted my first post my sister tried switching it on, it did switch on but then turned off and turned back on, and for the last time turned off again lol. anyways thanks for your time with this.
