Re: ok new question about RAM.

ok. i should have read threads b4 i posted. but there are so many. anyway. i went to crucial.com and i found my model, and its 240 pin.
anyway. i checked my system information with astra32, and it says -- physical memory array 1 info: maximumcapacity 4096 mb.

Q: can i exeed the maximum?
im thinking no, but im new to all this. just have to ask q's, and find friendly help.

i already have 2048 mb on my pc. soooo , my original plan was to add on 2 2gbs= 4gbs, in the empy slots.

Note: astra32 says on top" warning: smbios info. may be inacurate."
Maybe cuz its not the registered version. i dont know. any links to a better system info tool?

i will keep reading threads. peace.

Re: ok new question about RAM.

first things first if your system is a 32 bit one, it will only recognize 3.5 gb of ram

and secondly post your specs for computer so I can see what kind motherboard \, cpu ,ram etc you have

he said 4096.

badboy, your only real option is to remove the 2 sticks you have and use 2 x 2G, or get a pair of 1 G slots for the 2 empty ones.

I thought that was astra32 that said 4096 not crucial?

Re: ok new question about RAM.

yeah i used astra32 to check system info. but since its not the registered version, im thinking thats y it says "warning:smbios information may be inacurate".
so i scanned with cruicial,
here is the info that cruicial gave me:

Currently Installed Memory: 2GB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Number of Banks: 4
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Model 4, Stepping 3
CPU Speed: 3199 MHz
Installed in pairs of modules.

so yeah i believe i can only upgrade 2 more gs.

Re: ok new question about RAM.

The crucial page will tell you what the max ram the system can hold if you enter your brand and model number. I would consider using 2x2Gig sticks over 4 1Gig sticks as it's less problematic as long as your system will support 2gig per slot.
And sell the old sticks on ebay.

Sdram is older 100-133mhz mostly and then came DDR then DDR2 now DDR3 but they are not interchangeable.

Re: ok new question about RAM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM
For various technologies, there are certain bus and device clock frequencies that are standardized. There is also a decided nomenclature for each of these speeds for each type.

SDR SDRAM DIMMs - These first synchronous registered DRAM DIMMs had the same bus frequency for data, address and control lines.

* PC66 = 66 MHz
* PC100 = 100 MHz
* PC133 = 133 MHz

DDR SDRAM (DDR1) SDRAM DIMMs - DIMMs based on Double Data Rate (DDR) DRAM have data but not the strobe at double the rate of the clock. This is achieved by clocking on both the rising and falling edge of the data strobes.

* PC1600 = 200 MHz data & strobe / 100 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2100 = 266 MHz data & strobe / 133 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2700 = 333 MHz data & strobe / 166 MHz clock for address and control
* PC3200 = 400 MHz data & strobe / 200 MHz clock for address and control

DDR2 SDRAM SDRAM DIMMs - DIMMs based on Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) DRAM also have data and data strobe frequencies at double the rate of the clock. This is achieved by clocking on both the rising and falling edge of the data strobes. The power consumption and voltage of DDR2 is significantly lower than DDR(1) at the same speed.

* PC2-3200 = 400 MHz data & strobe / 200 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2-4200 = 533 MHz data & strobe / 266 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2-5300 = 667 MHz data & strobe / 333 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2-6400 = 800 MHz data & strobe / 400 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2-8000 = 1000 MHz data & strobe / 500 MHz clock for address and control
* PC2-8500 = 1066 MHz data & strobe / 533 MHz clock for address and control

DDR3 SDRAM SDRAM DIMMs - DIMMs based on Double Data Rate 3(DDR3) DRAM have data and strobe frequencies at double the rate of the clock. This is achieved by clocking on both the rising and falling edge of the data strobes. The power consumption and voltage of DDR3 is lower than DDR2 of the same speed.

* PC3-6400 = 800 MHz data & strobe / 400 MHz clock for address and control
* PC3-8500 = 1066 MHz data & strobe / 533 MHz clock for address and control
* PC3-10600 = 1333 MHz data & strobe / 667 MHz clock for address and control
* PC3-12800 = 1600 MHz data & strobe / 800 MHz clock for address and control
