Hi, Hope one of you fine people can help me out with this problem. I turned my PC on last night, and nothing happend. I turned the switch off and on at the back, as this sometimes cures the problem (It has happened intermittently for a while). My speakers gave their usual crackle that they do when I throw the power switch, and then nothing. The power switch has a light built in, and that is on. I took the side of the case off and have noted that the CPU fan spins for a second when the power is turned on via the back switch.
Could it be the power button at the front? Or could the PSU or M/B be broken? I assume that because the light comes on at the back, and the fan spins up momentarily there is power getting through somehow.

Re: PC wont turn on
Please list specs, including the power supply brand name and watts. (that information is on the side of the power supply)

Re: PC wont turn on
PC: Athlon dual core 5.2Ghz, 2gig RAM, Geforce 8800 GTX, Soundblaster Audigy
PSU: Hiper modular 580W MB:ALiveNF6P-VSTA The case is about 5 years old now, which could explain the intermitent power button problems at the front (worn out switch?) Last edited by XabisMission; 08-07-2008 at 05:31 AM. |

Re: PC wont turn on
The first suspect is the Hiper 580. Those power supplies are simply very weak and not very reliable. When you pair them with a video card like you have that demands a lot of power, they just can't stand up to the demands made on them. In addition, I would guess you should be pushing a good brand name 650+ power supply for that video card. Do you know anyone who has a good power supply you can try in there?

Re: PC wont turn on
Unfortunatley I dont know anyone with that sort of power. Ironic thing is I had to upgrade the PSU to run the video card. Do you have any idea why the CPU fan spools up for a second when I throw the switch? I would've thought if it had blown, nothing would work?

Re: PC wont turn on
My guess is that when you throw the switch, the power demand is the greatest on your rig. When the power demand is too great, I suspect it is too much for that power supply. No guarangees that this is your total issue, but my best thinking is the power supply is not up to the job of that video card. Sorry someone sold you a very weak power supply.

Re: PC wont turn on
Always that chance when a power supply is weak or quits. Let's hope that you didn't damage anything.
