Virtual Memory

Hi,

I play a free online game and it worked great for past couple of weeks but today it kept crashing and get a general protection fault that says insufficient memory, your virtual memory is full.

My Question: What is Virtual Memory and how can I get it lowered where it won't be full again? Thanks :)

Re: Virtual Memory

Right click on 'My Computer', then click on Properties.

Click on the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Performance', click 'Settings'.

Click on the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Virtual memory', click 'Change'.

Change Initial size to '512' and Maximum size to '1024'. Press 'Set'.

Restart computer, and that should do it.

Re: Virtual Memory

What OS are you running?
How much memory is installed?
How full is your hard drive ? You should have at least 20% free space on the drive.

Re: Virtual Memory

I am running XP Pro and I have 26.5 off my partition about 24% and my Windows partition has 8.9 gigs left but I am running the game off my 2nd partition because it's size is bigger.

I checked it and it was already set to 768 initial and 1536 Max. size, I've been playing for about 2 weeks and it just started this today and I haven't installed anything recently that could take that much memory.

Re: Virtual Memory

Ok this is it, 1 last shot and hope for an answer without having to answer 20 questions for each question I have and not get an answer or any suggestions!

Details:
I play a game online, it worked good for a few weeks then all of a sudden it starts crashing saying: "Insufficient Memory, your Virtual Memory is low"

Question:
How do I solve this? or atleast fix the problem?

This pc has 512 MB ram, my wife's pc has 448 MB ram, game works great on her pc but mine it crashes, any ideas will be helpful thanks :)

For proper support: what are you running? video card, cpu, m/board, ram, power supply, brand, wattage, any error message?
PCI-E requires 26 amps at 12 volts. That's a 650W PSU.
Power Supply Info and Selection . Info on thermal compounds & application . TEST PSU USING MULTI-METER

Re: Virtual Memory

Hi guys ,

you can manualy change the Virtual memory ..

Restart computer, and that should do it.

it depends on the amount of memory present in the laptop ..if the computer is having 1 gb memory you can keep the initial aount as 700 mg and the maxium amount of 1024 mb ... if the comptuer is having 2 gb of memory the inital can be as 1500 and the end can be 2048 mb ...it goes on depending on the Amount of memory present in the computer ..

Wrong. If the computer has 2GB of physical ram, the virtual ram should be less or even 0.

Are any applications also running at same time as game/? No

On performance tab, what does the bottom graph look like during game? only like 300 or 350 mb PF usage and the bottom graph is mainly bottom lined every now and then it jumps but not all the time

Poor advice.

Strictly speaking Virtual Memory is always in operation and cannot be ‘turned off’.

Turning it off, would waste a lot of the RAM. The reason is that when programs ask for an allocation of Virtual memory space, they may ask for a great deal more than they ever actually bring into use - the total may easily run to hundreds of megabytes. These addresses have to be assigned to somewhere by the system. If there is a page file available, the system can assign them to it - if there is not, they have to be assigned to RAM, locking it out from any actual use.

Let windows automatically manage the page file. Even with 4GB of RAM you should never set it to 0. Leave it at system managed (auto).
  1. Update windows to service pack 3.
  2. Update game patches (may fix memory leakage issues) where applicable.
  3. Update Direct X http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
  4. Restart.

Failing this i would follow these IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help and post your own thread. The reason i say this, is according to your profile, you have XP SP1, which is very insecure. Either way, a malware infection could be responsible for these symptoms, which may also be supported by the fact that the same game works fine on your wife's machine...

Please post back if any of the above ends up helping. Thank you.
