Virtual Memory
Hi,
I play a free online game and it worked great for past couple of weeks but today it kept crashing and get a general protection fault that says insufficient memory, your virtual memory is full. My Question: What is Virtual Memory and how can I get it lowered where it won't be full again? Thanks :) |

Re: Virtual Memory
Right click on 'My Computer', then click on Properties.
Click on the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Performance', click 'Settings'. Click on the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Virtual memory', click 'Change'. Change Initial size to '512' and Maximum size to '1024'. Press 'Set'. Restart computer, and that should do it. |

Re: Virtual Memory
Hi guys ,
you can manualy change the Virtual memory .. Restart computer, and that should do it. it depends on the amount of memory present in the laptop ..if the computer is having 1 gb memory you can keep the initial aount as 700 mg and the maxium amount of 1024 mb ... if the comptuer is having 2 gb of memory the inital can be as 1500 and the end can be 2048 mb ...it goes on depending on the Amount of memory present in the computer .. Re: Virtual Memory

Strictly speaking Virtual Memory is always in operation and cannot be ‘turned off’. Turning it off, would waste a lot of the RAM. The reason is that when programs ask for an allocation of Virtual memory space, they may ask for a great deal more than they ever actually bring into use - the total may easily run to hundreds of megabytes. These addresses have to be assigned to somewhere by the system. If there is a page file available, the system can assign them to it - if there is not, they have to be assigned to RAM, locking it out from any actual use. Let windows automatically manage the page file. Even with 4GB of RAM you should never set it to 0. Leave it at system managed (auto).
Failing this i would follow these IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help and post your own thread. The reason i say this, is according to your profile, you have XP SP1, which is very insecure. Either way, a malware infection could be responsible for these symptoms, which may also be supported by the fact that the same game works fine on your wife's machine... Please post back if any of the above ends up helping. Thank you. ![]()
