computer died
Hi
today when i got home my wife said the computer went "pop" and stopped working . I suspected a power supply problem ,i bought a new one on the way home and fitted it but comp still dead. i openened up the old psup and checked fuse with my diy volt meter and fuse was ok . i looked at your multimeter check list but my cheap volt meter is not up to the job so i suspect the motherboard is there an easier way to check it stan |

Re: computer died
Hi, is there any sign of life? Fans spinning, lights or sounds?
With your pc off and unplugged, remove the motherboard battery and clear the CMOS using the jumper or button on the motherboard. Your manual will guide you on how to do this. Replace the battery. Disconnect all peripherals and drives and try to start the pc with just the monitor, processor, minimal memory and the video card connected. Let us know if this at least gets you into POST and your Setup Menu's. Also please respond with the spec of the computer. System manufacturer & model, for example Dell Inspiron 1525, or Motherboard manufacturer & model, processor, memory details, video/graphics details and power supply manufacturer & model.

Re: computer died
Hi Stanlycam,
Did you try booting with just the bare necessities? CPU,RAM &Video? After you try that, remove the video card and boot...........see if you get any reaction. Next, remove the RAM and try again..........and finally the processor. All you want at this stage is any kind of positive reaction from the motherboard, hopefully beeping noises. Do you have access to another similar pc for you to swap the components out and try them on a known good motherboard? You could also try the "dead" motherboard with a different PSU, CPU, RAM & Video........one at a time........to find the weak/broken link. I appreciate this may not be possible for you, but it's really the only way to diagnose the problem.
