Dell Dimension 4300s confusion

I have conflicting reports that the 4300s has a maximum RAM of 512mb and 1gb. I know there are two ports, so can I have one 512mb in each port for a maximum of 1gb...or a 256mb in each port for 512mb.

just need help figuring out what the total maximum is.

thanks
