Power Supply Problem

New computer build... put a 750w power supply (Rosewill RX750-D-B) in the comp, was working for a bit, then while trying to put windows on my hard drive, the computer powered down, and now when I try to turn it back on, the fans start up for a split second, but it never powers up.

Specs - P5N-D Asus motherboard, Q6600 Intel, 4G Corsair ram, EVGA 8800GT, 500G Western Digital HD, 2 Lite On optical drives, stock cpu coolers, 1 front case fan, 1 side fan, 2 back fans.

Did I blow the power supply? Any tips/suggestions as to why it happened, and how to prevent it next time? Is this power supply a bad apple, or is it generally a bad PSU altogether? (I got it for about 35% it's MSRP value, so I couldn't resist) I can't RMA it, but it is under warranty, should I send it in and have it repaired?

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks. Brian

Re: Power Supply Problem

I would check the seating of the ram, video card and processor first. The only time I've had this sort of thing happen to me was when I accidentally shorted out a motherboard. The board failed halfway into a linux install, but the power supply was actually alright.

I would try a different psu first, and if that doesn't work, start looking for scorch marks on the motherboard :/

Re: Power Supply Problem

I appreciate the help, the power supply turns out is ok, but probably toasted something else (motherboard probably). Will never buy rosewill psu's again, it turns out the problem was likely due to the low amperage of the 12v rails.... I guess a 750w sli certified and recomended for 8800 GTXs power supply ONLY has 20 amps.... my fault for not checking. a 8800GT requires 26 amps MINIMUM for the 12v rail....

Dumb me, now i need a new power supply with enough amperage... any suggestions? I also gotta find out what i burned, prolly motherboard but well see. I want a 700-800w power supply with atleast 26 amps on 12v rail, preferably lower priced and on newegg.

Ty for help!

Re: Power Supply Problem

Take a look at the Corsair 650 to 750 (if you can, get the 750 to future proof any near upgrades you might want down the road), it will run about anything you wish and still have power to spare. They seem to be on sale quite a few places now, so shop at NewEgg and some of the other popular online stores.
