Re: Hard core gaming at Maxed out settings : 2GB or 4GB?

I would run with 2 x 2gb sticks as you probably already know ...... 32bit Operating system will only use it as 3.5gigs

but the high end games during maxed settings can use slightly more than 2 gigs of ram

but NEVER more than 2.5 gigs

you could run 2 x one gig sticks and 2 x 512 to get 3 gig in matched & dual channel

but motherboards get cranky when you try to overclock a 4 stick set-up

Re: Hard core gaming at Maxed out settings : 2GB or 4GB?

DDR3 right now is overpirced and slower than DDR2 because of the higher latencies of DDR3

for example DDR2-800 / PC6400 can have good latencies of 4-4-4-12

there are DDR3 1600 sticks which have latencies of 7-7-7-22 or something along those lines

think of it as DDR2-800 takes 4 seconds to empty the garbage pail and get ready for another load

DDR3 1600 holds almost twice as much garbage but takes him nearly twice as long per trip............. the speed increase of the DDR3-1600 is lost to his almost double time to empty the load

there will come a time when DDR3 will get above 1600mhz and if the latencies drop a tad in the future they will become faster than DDR2-800

right now ...... DDR2 is still king, really soooo when you figure in prices

in the future DDR3 will become more competitive and their latencies will get lower, but right now the memory manuf's are milking the "FAD" seekers................. they pay the big bucks for memory and motherboards that doesnt really offer much in the way of value..... but hey; it the latest thing out !!

Re: Hard core gaming at Maxed out settings : 2GB or 4GB?

we are at the END of socket 775 ........ next year all the motherboards will be 1300 or so pins ????? who knows for sure with the final release of Intel Nehalm

those will use DDR3 for sure and the first 18 months of that will be VERY high $$$$$

stick with your current spec for the next two years and you will be fine

Re: Hard core gaming at Maxed out settings : 2GB or 4GB?

if your motherboard can use DDR2 yes you would be better off

thats why they (mobo manufs) had to make a selection of boards in the new X38 chipset family that used DDR2 ......... because in head to head comparisions the X38 with DDR3 was getting hammered by P35chipset with DDR2

that memory that you listed with 9-9-9-24 would really get spanked by DDR2-800 :) >>>>> especially if the DDR2 ssytem was overclocked at all

Re: Hard core gaming at Maxed out settings : 2GB or 4GB?

as far as i know... my motherboard (GIGABYTE GA-X48T-DQ6 ) does not support ddr2 memory.. so.. either i go for a different motherboard .. in tht case please recommend one... or.. i stick to the ddr3 memory which we selected ...

OCZ 4gb 1600mhz 7-7-6-22..

Re: Hard core gaming at Maxed out settings : 2GB or 4GB?

I am curious as hell; but why would you want to spend all that money on an X48 chipset board ?????

the X38 / X48 / P45 all offer nothing the P35 cant do and for a hell of alot less money ???

dont want to throw a wrench in your gears but I hate to see people get rooked for nothing !!

as for PCI express 2.0 (if thats why you are chasing this board) 2.0 offers us nothing right now; its an avenue for future development but hardly worth paying over $100.00 extra on

in your shoes ........ I would opt for the GA- EP35-DS4 or GA-EP35-DQ6

if you are sold on PCI 2.0 ....... the at least limit the blood shed to GA-P45-DS4

with the "other" possibility I must throw in the Asus P5Q either Pro or Deluxe

some of these will use both DDR2- and DDR3 memory :)
