Hi all.
![]() My computer had 512MB of RAM (1x512) and today I added some more, namely 2x256MB=512MB. The computer booted OK, but I checked and from the two new sticks only one is recognized. - BIOS says there's 512MB on slot 1 (the old one) and 256 on slot 3. There should've been also another 256 on #2. - Windows Hardware info (from control panel) also gives 768MB (bit less actually, coz of shared graphics memory) The CPU-Z program, however, mentions 1024MB in total, but still reports no memory in slot #2!!! I can't understand what's wrong..Here's a screenshot: ![]() Both new memories are identical (at least I think so). I tried to swap them, or even install them on slots 3, 4 (bypassing slot #2), but still nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks! PS Forgot to say that even this little extra memory seems to boost the system. Some demanding programs seem to run more smoothly now. -- Windows XP SP2 Desktop PC (HP) USB mouse PS2 keyboard 768 RAM MSI-AMETHYST-M AMD Athlon 64 3500+ |

agreed. Sounds like your mobo might be trying to use dual channel when it can't (?).

Re: Assistance needed: Weird (?) RAM problems (screenshot included)
Thanks for your answers. I tried that, but it didn't work
![]() It didn't recognize either of them, just the 512MB existing one. It seems at this point as if the only slots recognized are 1 & 3. I wonder if it means they have to be paired or something (1 & 3, 2 & 4) Here's the results of the scan from crucial.com, if it offers any extra info about my system. Dual channel is possible, according to it. http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner...F5129F31D926C3 Any other ideas? ![]() -- Windows XP SP2 Desktop PC (HP) USB mouse PS2 keyboard 768 RAM MSI-AMETHYST-M AMD Athlon 64 3500+ |

Re: Assistance needed: Weird (?) RAM problems (screenshot included)
put the 256 sticks in 1 and 3 and see what it does? Then put the 512 in slot 2?is dual channel turned on in BIOS? may have to disable it?

Re: Assistance needed: Weird (?) RAM problems (screenshot included)
Hi again.. I was out for the weekend
![]() I tried this and again, it recognizes the ones that are paired in 1 & 3. I think I'll have to get another memory, so that I have 2 pairs. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your efforts ![]() |

Re: Assistance needed: Weird (?) RAM problems (screenshot included)
Here's an update, if some1 is facing the same troubles..
I got another 512MB stick. Having the original in #1, I placed the new one in #3. Booted OK, system recognized both properly, as 512MB each. Then I tried to place the two 256MB ones in #2 and #4. Guess what? System reports 4 sticks, 256MB each!! Any suggestions? Or do I just leave the 2x512 and feel thankful? ;)
