Mistake new comp, four blown power supplies

I bought a new comp in Feb 08 and admittedly ran the hell out of it. I constantly used the dvd burner and hardly ever shut the comp down to rest. Of course the power supply failed within two months. It simply wouldn't come on one morning. I installed a new power supply and after one month it sizzled and blew. A third power supply, in which I upped the wattage and drastically reduced usage, shut down after one week. A fourth, yet again upped wattage and barely even turned on, power supply shut down within a few days.

What do I need to do? I rendered my destructive ways (even though I never had a problem with two previous comps and the same mentality), what part do I need to look at to prevent further blown power supplies? THe motherboard? Possibly the dvd burner? (it is the only common factor with all four supplies)

Please, any help, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I can't afford a new comp and have never had a good experience with repair shops and the warranty is crap without handing over the comp.

Thanks

Hey mate and welcome to TSF...
First of all, could you provide us with your system specifications...
Second, could you name all PSUs that your PC killed... ^-^
Maybe you were buying wrong ones all the time [underpowered I meant to say ^-^]
Report back please...

Roll Eyes Re: new comp, four blown power supplies

Well There Is nothing wrong with your Power Supplies. I think The you have Misshandled Your PC and Your Motherboard Suffers there must something wrong with your Motherbord. Any component component on the board may be sorting and as timley used it overloads the Power Supply and Chuzzzzzzz it fries the power supply.Or May be any drive like your hard drive or as you mentioned your CD writer may be overloading the power supply. I Strongly Recommend you Chech out all your drives and your Motherboard(Espcially Capacitors on the motherboard).

Re: new comp, four blown power supplies

I think you need to try getting to fans in your pc like I did, 1 in the back and another in the front by the HD.

Re: new comp, four blown power supplies

AS REQUESTED

your complete system spec is required (use everest home edition if you are unsure ..... its free)

try to tell us about your other power supplies ...... what make and model ..... where did you get them ....... how much did you pay ?

thats absolutely absurd to think you are running the computer too much or too hard ..... I build computers for customers who leave their computers on 24/7 ..... when they are not actively using them ......folding at home is running on them !

Re: new comp, four blown power supplies

Oi, sorry. I was in PO mode and forgot to put in the sytem info.

Acer Aspire T180
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM
160 GB SATA HD
DVD +/- RW dual layer
NVIDIA GEFORCE 6100 Graphics
Windows Vista Home Ed.

I -know- I burned up the first power supply---the OS gave me warnings to shut down and after I was done burning the dvd I did shut it down... it died the next morning. I don't know the brand of that one but it was only 200 watts. The second was Diablo Tech at 250watts that I got from TigerDirect.com. I had been using it in an old comp for about 6 months. It sizzled and sparked and blew after a month in the new computer. The shelf life of the Diablos is only 6-8 months so I figured that it was just its time to die :) The third, I can't remember the brand but I got it from TIgerDirect also and it was 300watts. I managed to cash in on the warranty for that one. I also unplugged the speakers and MP3 player that both drew their power from the comp itself to help prevent overtaxing the power supply. THe last I got from Fry's for about $50 which was an Antec Basiq Power 350 watt (it's what the employee said to get). I used the comp a combined total of 2 hours before it quit.

I pulled the whole tower apart piece by peice and can tell that nothing seems out of order to the eye, no swollen caps etc.

I don't believe a second fan will help at the moment because with the last two units I barely used the computer at all... I was too scared it would jump up and bite me or catch fire or something equally insane. It had no time to heat up so the fans weren't an issue.

All I can figure is I have messed up something on the motherboard with the first two units blowing, or else the dvd burner is warped--like i said, I use it extensively.

HOnestly, I know I bought a semi-cheap comp, but I just wanted it to last out the year so I could buy a nice one next spring. I've never had so much trouble before--and I pieced all my old ones togethermyself. :(

Hope I remembered everything, sorry if not. But thanks for the help so far. :)

Re: new comp, four blown power supplies

hmmmmmm you did nothing wrong except reteadly buying cheap, underpowered power supplies even the one from FRY's was over priced JUNK

try a Coolermaster Real Power Pro 550 watt

OCZ 600 watt

Corsair HE-520 watt or Corsair VX-550 watt

then lets see if you trash another !! hell you have wasted enough $$$$$ already to have bought a good unit

then you can run it 24/7 if you desire !
