Computer is Dead.

Ok, so about 10 months ago, I basically rebuilt my computer with a new mobo, psu, gfx card, and the works. I use it on occasion with no real problems. Today, I was trying to copy my text messages from my phone to my computer(on a side note: anyone know of a good program to do this? I have a Sony Ericsson w580). I have the usb cable for my phone and the SE program installed and can sync up with the computer for contacts. But I downloaded this other program that I now cant find and was trying to use it. Whenever it started up and would scan my com ports and would find my computer. then it would try to sync with it and the computer made an odd noise (I figured it was just my older hdd failing.) and then my computer shut down. I know there is a virus on there that randomly shuts down my computer and pops up a message box that says "fAIL", which popped up. So I didn't think much of it. So I restarted my computer and tried it all again. this time same thing happened, but the 'fAIL' message didn't pop up. I went to start up my computer and NOTHING. No fans, no lights, nothing is working. I thought my PSU might be bad so I hooked up another psu and When I pust the button to turn my computer on, the case lights will turn for like like half a second and the fan will barely move. It would best be explained as the power source taken away and maybe had a bit of power stored in the computer, but not enough to do anything. I do know the second PSU worked when I removed it. So, so here is my question. Do you think my Mobo or PSU is bad?. If the ram/cpu/gfxcard and etc. the hardware lights should still turn on.

Like I said the mobo and the PSU are less than a year old. I bought them from newegg and should be able to RMA because I didn't do anything that would cause it to fail besides normal use, but need to know which I should rma

EDIT: I didn't know the best place to post this because I am not for sure whats wrong with it, but if a mod feels like there is a more appropiate place for this, please move it.

APEVIA ATX-AS520W BLUE 520W ATX Power Supply --> Link

Foxconn NF4SK8AA-8EKRS 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard --> Link

The computer was a Gateway GT5032. For some reason my mobo fried in it and was not under warranty. I bought an atx case, that mobo, and a bigger power supply and transfered the rest of the stuff over. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.2ghz. I have 3 gigs of ram, 2 512 sticks and 2 1gb sticks. They are some off brand that I dont remember the name of off the top of my head. The gfx card is an XFX 8600gt XXX edition. Had three hard drives 2 250gb hdds, one IDE and one SATA and one 40gb IDE hdd. I also have 2 dvd drives. The 520w PSU should have been able to power that considering the 300w PSU was doing fine and was carrying the same payload with the exception of 1 250gb sata hdd.

Re: Computer is Dead.

Hard to say, the power supply's effieciency is not that great, if
you take into consideration one 12 volt rail, and then subtract
around %30 of what it will actually put out you are kinda lacking.
Another thing is the foxcon board, lower tier, and not very dependable.
Flakey is a better word, in my experience anyway.
When a power supply fails, it will sometimes take the mobo with it.
If I was confident about the power supply I would think the mobo
died.. Just re read your post that noise you heard may have been the
power supply...Roll the dice, If you have my luck the power supply
died and then zapped your board on the way out....

Re: Computer is Dead.

thanks, at the time I ordered this, I didn't much research and was on a budget. I know the original board that fried in the Gateway was a Foxconn. As for the PSU, I just thought it looked cool. Guess you learn. I dont quite understand what you are saying about the PSU with the 12v rail and etc, but I will try to look itup and have a better understanding for my next choice. I guess I will just RMA both of them to newegg
