Question Ram compatability

My neighbor was throwing his old computer away so I snagged it.It is an eMachine T2482, AMD Athlon XP 2400+. It took so long to boot the first time I tried that I thought it was dead. I tried again later, was called away from my bench and when I came back it was up, but sooo slow. I checked for stuff in the start up cleaned that up and it got a little better. I ended up tossing all his files, and most of his programs, and got it to where it is running decently. I have decided to give it to my sister, she has an antique that barely runs. I opened it up and gave it a thorough cleaning and found it has one stick of ram >>Crucial 256Mb DDR 400 CL3<<< and one empty slot. I checked through my parts and found a ^^Samsung 256Mb DDR PC 3200 CL3 ^^ stick. Can I use that with the old one? If not, will replacing it with the 3200 increase performance? I also have two matching 128Mb DDR PC 2700 CL25sticks, would that be any improvement?
I really don't want to buy new ram for it, I will have to invest on a new WinXP OS, to be legal, so I'm trying to keep my cost down. I have a lot more labor than money.

Re: Ram compatability

If it has XP OEM installed and a product key on the side I would say your good with an OEM machine.

It looks like it shipped with PC2100 in it. So I say to try try the PC3200 you have if it doesn't work out DDR is pretty cheap now a days. I would try for at least 512Mb ! Gig is even better.

Believe it or not, when that little computer was brand new, it actually ran pretty good with just 256m of ram. Adding another 256 would be good.
If you have some,,,,,try it. It shouldn't hurt anything and may just work OK. If it does, you're good to go.

I clean up PC's like that all the time that are so loaded down with crapola that they will hardly run. Eliminate all the junk and then run a good Anti-Virus program to clean it up and keep it safe.
AVG 8.0 FREE is the only AV program I'll use. It now incorporates anti-spyware and anti-trojan protection too.
Doing a Spyware scan with Spybot Search&Destroy would be my next step.

Good Luck,
The Shadow

Re: Ram compatability

Thanks, as long as it won't hurt it I'll experiment. It is running really well now, I'm surprised at how fast it is on 256Mb.
I have it running, but it won't recognize my external HDD I have the install disk (Backpack) and have installed uninstalled and re-installed. It is a clone of my main Internet computer's HDD that crashed the other day. (Jealous of my attention to the new one?)
my music machine shut down too, and I discovered the CPU heat sink and fan had come loose. I cleaned the old thermal grease off and found scratches on the heat sink surface. I am going to try to polish it flat, but my friend with the right equipment is busy with his honey do list on weekends.
They say when it rains it pours.
Thanks again, I'm back to the grind.

Re: Ram compatability

I put the other stick of ram in and I guess it works, although Everest reports 480MB not 512. It says PC 3200, and I think the Crucial that was originally in it is PC 2700. It is a bit better. I found tha tthe Win XP wasn't registered, the user name is Owner, so I ordered one stick of 1024 for my little sis instead of a new OS.
