New power supply problem

Okay well Im not very computer hardware savvy, however, recently I bought a Corsair 750tx to be able to stick a more power consuming video card in there and to replace my current 250watts one that came with the computer when I bought it . I unplugged and unscrewed the old power supply and then plugged in and screwed in the new one. I made everything the same as the old one (had to make the 8 pin into 4 pin) and so excited I proceeded to plug it in and turn the computer on.

At first everything was going fine and then all the sudden the computer turned off. I turned it back on and made it to windows loaded up and it turned off again. I tried 4 times before stopping because I dont want to fry the computer or anything =(
Each time it turned on for a minute before turning itself off.

Only 4 things were plugged in: the hard drive, cd drive, and 4 pin/20 pins in motherboard.

Dunno if this matters but:

Motherboard is Abit NF-M2S or something
3 gigs ram
Windows Vista
AMD 5200+ Athlon

The power supply has alot of cables so there were sticking out of the side still because I didnt want to tie them together until I was sure it would work. Dont think that the computer being open could be the problem though.

So then I thought that maybe 750watts is too much for the wall socket but the fuse didnt go..

At the moment the old power supply is back in and the comps working fine.

Did I get a defective or broken power supply? This is really confusing because it works for a minute before just turning off.
Or maybe I'm plugging it in wrong or something but Im 90% sure its the same wires that the old one is using.

From what I can tell, there shouldnt be any compatibility issues with the comp should there?

Re: New power supply problem

If you have a 20+4 pin ATX connector, make sure you aren't using the extra 4 pin from the 24 pin connector for the Molex connector to the motherboard. The Molex connector must be a separate connector coming from the power supply. That extra 4 pin from the ATX connector doesn't have to plug in to anything with a 20 pin motherboard connector.

Re: New power supply problem

The motherboard is 24 pin, however, the old power supply is only 20 pin and its working fine. I tried with both 20 pin and 24 pin and the problem still existed.

The other thing that is plugged into the motherboard has 2 pins on top of each other, not 4 in a row and it is coming from a different wire

Is it a possible compatibility issue? Dunno computers very well but it seems this happens alot

Btw only 2 wires go to the motherboard right?

Gonna try again today and see if I can get into the bios

Re: New power supply problem

Well it sounds like a bad power supply, I have a multimeter there are good instructions here
Test your power supply with a multi meter
