Confused My new RAM is not detected.

Hi everyone.

I already had 2 Samsung 1gb PC2-6400 @ 800 in my system but as i've bought a new garphics card. I thought of adding more RAM. So i bought one of the same spec on ebay, i.e : PC2-6400 @800 mhz.

However, when i've put it in. It doesn't count it as an addition. What i mean is that i can see it in everest and on crucial system scan. But it doesn't appear as 3gb.

The difference that i can see in everest, is the timing. (Btw, I've got no idea what "timing" mean >_< ) ... The 2 samsung ones are 6-6-6-18 but the new one is 5-5-5-18... So, any idea if i can get this RAM to work?

Any help is much appreciated. :)

Re: My new RAM is not detected.

Hi,
Your motherboard may use Dual channel Memory config, which means either 2 or 4 memory sticks.................and yes, the timings do matter. All your RAM should be of exactly the same make and spec.
What is the full spec of your pc? Motherboard, cpu, power etc?

Re: My new RAM is not detected.

Yes indeed, its dual channel. So i guess its not gonna work? ... My specs are:
board: Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L
CPU: Intel E2140 1600Mhz
PSU: 650W winpower.

So, i'll absolutely need 2 of the same brand. Cause i thought that it was only the speed that counts.

Re: My new RAM is not detected.

Hi, as long as the module has the same speed, latency ( e.g. CL5) and timings you may be fine, but not all brands of ram are compatible.
The timings (e.g. 6-6-6-18) indicate the amount of clock cycles that it takes the memory to perform a certain operation. The smaller the number, the faster the memory is.

Many reputable sites have a memory configurator, where you enter you're motherboard model and they match up memory for it. The best deals are for the dual channel kits, where you can buy 2 or 4 sticks, all identical.

As you already have 2 sticks, you're best bet is obviously to buy 2 more of EXACTLY the same kind. They will have a number and spec on them.
