Ram Upgrade Question???

Greetings,

I am upgrading a HP Pavillion 526x that has 2x128mb PC2100 chips in it, and I went to crucial.com and they tell me that I can do a maximum of 2x512mb PC2700 or PC3200 chips. So I bought 2 512PC2700 chips and installed them but my PC won't boot up correctly, sometimes it just hangs on the Windows XP loading bar screen, I went into system setup and it shows both chips at a total of 1024mb. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't PC2100 sdram, and since it was the original factory installation, do I have to tell the PC to accept DDR ram instead since that is what the PC2700 ram is? Please help any advice or suggestions is appreciated. Thank you in advance for your responses they are appreciated.
