Hello, Ive got yet another problem with my pc but this time its the booting. After opening the pc, and looking around, taking off the cpu fan, taking out the cpu, my pc doesnt boot up. It turns on, stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes off. If i turn it on right after it goes off, it stays on for only around a second. the longer ''cooldown'' time i give it the longer it stays on (although after 2hrs 10 seconds is max)
My PSU is a very crap, non-branded psu, and its power was used to the max. I tried taking out the graphics card, unplugging the case fans, and the dvd drive, but it doesnt help. My specs: Win XP Pro SP2 GF7050V-M7 Motherboard 3gb ram (2gb buffalo stick + 1gb unsure, something like R Data) 400w WinPower PSU (the suspect) 8600GTS Galaxy 512mb DDR3 graphics card 250gb maxtor diamondmax 21 SATA HDD |

Re: PC Doesnt boot up
You most likely do have a power supply that is not up to the job, but the immediate problem of the shutting down I think is that when you took it apart, you didn't clean off the old thermal paste properly and reapply it properly. I think that is your immediate problem and why it is shutting down. If you decide to redo the paste, follow these directions:
Applying Artic Silver Thermal Paste Therefore, find yourself a qualty power supply and change that thermal paste as per those directions. BTW, I think you need around a 550 watt quality power supply for this rig, and if you plan on upgrading the video card in the future, then go for a minimum of 650 watts. Here is a list of quality supplies: Seasonic - any model Corsair - any model Thermaltake - "Toughpower" series only Coolermaster - "Real Power Pro" series only PC Power & Cooling - any model Silverstone - any model

Re: PC Doesnt boot up
OCZ is a decent power supply. I have no concerns about a good 600 watt OCZ and it would pull that video card.
However, if you upgrade in the near future (everyone does eventually) to the 8800 series video card, then it might be too much for it. If you look around some of the sites on the internet, the 700 OCZ is a great power supply and some times you can find it cheaper than the 600 since it is more popular.

Re: PC Doesnt boot up
Here is a great deal on a super power supply (top of the line), and it would pull even an 8800 video card for you. It has a mail in rebate that would take it to the $89,99 range.

Re: PC Doesnt boot up
Something very interesting happened, i decided to look inside the pc again, and ive noticed that when the pc is laying down FLAT on the floor, is starts up and works like it should, but when i put it up straight, it goes off like described in the topic.
So i took off my cpu cooler, took out the cpu and looked if there arent any bent pins or anything (its a pentium dual core 3.2GHz = 6.4GHz and the cpu itself doesnt have pins, the pins are on the cpu socket) The pins were alright, and i put it all back together. After doing that, Poof! magically the pc starts up, and works as normal! Although i wont take any more risks, and i will buy the PSU |

Re: PC Doesnt boot up
That is a good plan. Not worth losing components over a cheap power supply. I will mark this one as solved, but write back if you have further issues.
