RAM timings and opinion..

Hello.... i have corsair XMS2 2GB (2x1GB) ram....

ive overclocked my processor to 2.91GHz... ive heard that the RAM shud also be overclocked in order to cope with the processor...

but in order to do that i have to set the ram timings which i have no experience on it... i attached my BIOS on setting RAM timings... ive tried setting the 1st four option to 4-4-4-12 and the others auto.. the computer gives a long "beep" sounds which freaks me out and i quickly turn it off and reset the CMOS to make it to default settings...

the problem is... when the settings are at default, the winXP loading looks very smooth.. however.. when i overclocked to current settings... the loading appears like stuck for a while and then after a while it backs to normal...but when it comes to the system everything looks fine!!

the question is, shud i change the RAM timings in order to cope with the ocd settings? if so, what number shud i enter to the bios (im not really into the max.. as long as its stable and runs fine and smooth to me.. thats kinda okay)... and if OCd RAM is risky... im buying another set of RAM ... its 2GB... so equivalent to 4GB.. i know the XP didnt detect all 4GB but some forums says its better especially in playing games...

so is by adding these another sets of RAM can cope with current settings? any opinions will help... thanx in advance...

try settings 5-5-5-15 first and then you can try pulling them back one you get stable.
Also make sure you manually set your ram voltage to 2.1V

i mean you asked me to set the first four in the bios to 5-5-5-15... how bout the rest? just leave it to auto? and then i change the voltage to 2.1v which now i use only 1.9v... how bout the DRAM Speed? can i just leave it to default (DDR-969).. thnx and hope that u provide me step-by-step guidance next...

The fact that you were only running 1.9V may have been your initial problem but it will not hurt to loosen your timings to 5-5-5-15 to start.
I would leave DRam speed @969 and see how you go

If it runs stable you can try pulling the latencies back towards 4-4-4-12

well.. ive did what u tell and sadly the computer turns BSoD right at the startup so i change back everything to defaults....

here i attach pics on how i did it incase if im doing sumthing wrong... after setting it back to default.. i send the error reports to microsoft and i attach on what they suggest... any idea next? maybe that my ram max votage is just 1.9v..

and still the windows loading doesnt run smooth when i change the timings and volts.. its like choking...and then its fine again.. :)

oh yeah.. about ur link of corsair ram... thats not mine.. mine was the link that i gave u earlier... cheers!

oh btw how do i run my RAM to 800MHz ? i heard that it can run at 5-5-5-12 T1 @ 800MHz ... i dont really know about RAM but is this so called "low latency timings" consider fast? well i dont really get it... :S

Since your RAM has a recommended voltage of 1.9V, I think it'll run fine at that setting. To run at 800MHz, change the FSB:RAM ratio setting; it's listed as "DRAM Speed (CPU : DRAM)" in the uGuru screen. In the photo, you're running at 2:3 so look for 4:5 which would run your RAM at 403.75MHz (807.5MHz effective).

well.. heres i attached the BIOS pic of my computer.. i dun see any 4:5 ratio...

and also, i see that ure multiplying the number by 2... as i assume its due to ddr2... here i attached the cpuz pic...its 484.6MHZ.. its that mean 969.2MHz??

4:5 is equivalent to the 1:1.25 setting.

Yeah, it's multiplied by 2 because it's double-pumped due to the Double Data Rate technology.

well.... ive changed it.. i notice that the frequency is lower than the default settings.... i dont really understand this, is it mean that the speed of the ram is decreasing which also decrease the computer speed?sorry dun really understand about RAM readings...

Well you asked how to run the RAM at 800MHz with the CPU overclocked, and that's the method. It's currently running at around 807MHz, which is only slightly more than stock and leaves a bit more room for you to OC your FSB if you're that way inclined. Generally you get more performance if your CPU and RAM are both OCed as opposed to just one of the two.

so do u think it is good or the previous setting was better? if this is good so ill just leave it this way if thats what u preferred.. i dun think i have to OCd my processor anymore as im getting bored of the BSoD coming due to OCd and also instability... hehe

I would say the previous setting's faster. If you keep getting BSODs just wind down your clocks in 2MHz increments or relax your RAM timings until you stop getting them, then run Prime95 or ORTHOS for 12 hours. If they don't spit out any errors then it's pretty much stable, otherwise keep going.
