RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

I have purchased 2 X 1 GB RAM to upgrade from the 1 X 512mb card I had. When one new 1GB Ram inserted into slot 1 system detects it & boots into Win XP OK.
When 2 X 1Gb inserted ie. one GB per slot, system beeps on power on probably indicating RAM failure.
Then tried both new 1GB cards in slot one individually & system detected them ok. Tried both cards in slot 2 & system detected them ok.
Problem is when I insert a card into both slots system indicates failure. I am running it at the moment with 1Gb only in slot 1.
M/B is Gigabyte K8M800 with AMD Athlon 64 1.8Ghz.
Any ideas?

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

Hi 2pistolpacker- No idea - Memory bought on E-bay from 'Fast Memory Man'. Appears to be generic with only '1GB PC3200 184 Pin 400Mhz DDR DIMM" written on a stick on tag that is stuck onto a blue metal shield that protects both sides of the DIMM. I have tried to gently remove it but no go. I feel I would lift some ICs if any force is used.
Also I've checked BIOS for any tweaks with no result. Any motherboard jumpers that you might know of?

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

2pistolpacker- PS I bought the 2 DIMMs as a "2GB Kit". I have read the memo from 123Speedster about 'Before you buy memory' & have done a configurator on the mobo I have. It indicates that the Gigabyte K8M800 runs dual channel memory so this seems to be where I am running into problems ie trying to use the ram in dual mode where the system is not detecting dual channel but detects single channel ok.

Install CPUz and run the program, first with one stick then the other. It will ID the memory and what speed and timings it is running. Report back with that info. Mike

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

Hi 2pistolpacker

Ran CPUz. Could not quickly figure out how to save the Memory Tab result so I've typed it out below. The info below is for each 1 x 1GB DIMM in slot 1. Both the same.

CPUz Result - Memory Tag.
Type DDR Channels # Single
Size 1024 MB

Dram Freq 200.0Mhz
FSB DRAM CPU/9
CAS # Latency 3.0 Clocks
RAS to CAS Delay 3.0 Clocks
RAS Precharge 3.0 Clocks
Cycle Time 8 Clocks
Bank Cycle 11 Clocks
Command Rate 2T
DRAM Idle Timer 16 Clocks

The SPD Tag shows
Slot 1 DDR
Slot 2 Empty ( Known )
Module size 1024 MBytes
Max Bandwidth PC3200(200Mhz)
Manufacturer (Blank)
Timings tables shown for 133Mhz, 166 & 200
The results equal the info above for 200MHZ ie 3,3,3,8.
Voltage 2.5v.

Thanks
2wartz

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

Boot into the BIOS with your single stick and manually disable dual-channel mode, see if that helps.

Do take note that FastMemoryMan's Samsung and generic RAM modules are all high density, and incompatible with a lot of motherboards.

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

Hi Underclocker
I have been through the BIOS 3 times & there is no reference to dual channel or single channel memory that I can identify. There are voltage settings I can tweak but nothing that remotely looks helpful. The mobo will support dual channel according to Gigabytes website but there was no other indication of how to achieve this. There are only 2 memory slots so the method of using slot one for one DIMM or slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 if you have two DIMMs to get dual channel can't work with mine. The BIOS is Award Software & CPUz tells me its BIOSis "FD 6A7L1G04"
I get bugger all when I Google this though.

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

What is the exact model of your motherboard? K8M800 is only a VIA chipset. Anyway, if it only has two RAM slots then any twin identical sticks can run in dual-channel mode. Also check your mobo's manual for any mention of a dual channel setting.

Re: RAM Failure at power on with 2 slots occupied

Hi Underclocker
MoBo is Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M rev 2.0.
I have tried my two new Dimms in my other PC today which is a Gigabyte 7VM400M MoBo with AMD 2600 & I get boot at power on & 2GB memory detected. Seems to be some setup is needed for the K8VM800M mobo to detect more than 1GB.
